Deputy shoots Boulevard Park man wielding a knife

Press release from King County:

A Sheriff's deputy shot and seriously wounded a man with a knife at a domestic violence disturbance on September 2nd. The incident occurred about 10:50 p.m. inside an apartment at 10002 Des Moines Memorial Drive (Boulevard Park neighborhood, unincorporated King County).

Two deputies had responded to a 9-1-1 call at the apartment. Reportedly a man was assaulting his wife at that location. Deputies arrived and the man was shot about two minutes later. The wife and two other females were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.

The suspect is 36 years old and lives at the location, as does his 35 year-old wife. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. There is a current No Contact Order in place prohibiting contact between the man and his wife and children. He is also a convicted felon with two Assault 3rd Degree convictions.

Sheriff's deputies were last at the apartment in August of 2010 when the man was arrested on domestic violence charges.

The deputy who fired the shot is a veteran officer with at least 25 years working at the Sheriff's Office.

You Are What You Eat: Save Some Summer by Freezing Herbs

The green herbs of summer are here! I am throwing them into everything I make right now. Green herbs can add an aromatic layer to your recipes, which can take away the need to use salt as a flavor enhancer. Using less salt in your diet helps to keep your blood pressure low and your kidneys healthy.

I am so spoiled with fresh herbs now, it is hard for me to go back to dried herbs because they lack so much of that earthy greenness. Fortunately, you can freeze fresh herbs for year-round use. Freezing also helps them retain their color, flavor and vitamins.

After washing your herbs, remove the tough stems. Finely chop the remaining leaves, and put them in ice cube trays. Add water and put them in the freezer until frozen solid. Then remove the cubes and store them in small bags in the freezer until needed.

When I am in a hurry, I just throw fresh herbs in the freezer, unwrapped, until frozen. Then I remove them, break them up, and put them in zip-lock bags to store in the freezer.

Another technique is to wrap whole sprigs of herbs in aluminum foil and then freeze them. This allows you to crush the herbs with the palm of your hand while they are still in the foil.

Volunteers needed for the eighth annual Sustainable Ballard Festival

The eighth annual Sustainable Ballard Festival will take place September 25 at the Ballard Commons Park and they need some great volunteers to make everything run smoothly.

The Sustainable Ballard Festival is a community fair and the culmination of all of our hard work - a showcase for the activities and initiatives our neighbors have engaged in throughout the year.

The 2011 Festival will feature live music, how-to workshops, fun & educational activities, local and sustainable businesses and much more.

Transportation is the theme this year, in support of 350.org's Moving Planet: A day to move beyond fossil fuels.

On Saturday September 24, Sustainable Ballard will feature a Moving Transportation Fair and Bike Ride in partnership with The BikeShare Group.

On Sunday September 25, the festival will, as in years past, fill Ballard Commons park with green exhibits, workshops, music and activities.

If you are interested in offering your help at a pre-festival work party or at the Ballard Commons Park, email volunteer@fest.sustainableballard.org.

Police Blotter Week of 9-5-11

Landscaping assault
On Aug. 18 a guy was yanking out raspberry bushes and spraying their roots on a hillside along S.W. Kenyon when a neighbor stepped onto his back porch and started yelling at the guy, saying if he keeps spraying nothing will ever grow back. The landscaper explained the idea was to eradicate the bushes so new plant life could grow in their place. It was a conversation the two had had several times in the past. This time, however, things escalated. The irate neighbor grabbed his garden hose, fired it up and sprayed the victim for 30 seconds. After the thorough soaking, the victim called police. When they arrived, officers knocked at the suspect’s door to no response, so they called in his license plate for an identity and told the victim to call again if anything happens in the future.

West Seattle rocker Star Anna performed last night, tonight, in Pearl Jam's line-up at PJ20 in Wisconsin

According to reports, both she and West Seattle's Eddie Vedder delivered in the rain

West Seattle's new music phenom Star Anna of the band Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs who performed at Hiawatha Park Thursday night as we reported here got even more attention as they performed last night as part of the line-up in Pearl Jam's PJ20 (Pearl Jam 20) Concert at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin. She was in the line-up culminating with West Seattle's Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam.

According to a musical blog on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Star Anna performed well. They write "...Star Anna was a young, barroom-tough rocker with an extraordinary heart and voice."

"Star Anna and the Laughing Dogs was a great way to start off the day for me even in the soaking rain. She has a commanding and beautiful voice and with her band they helped brighten the mood. The day's first surprise was when Pearl Jam's Mike McCready – Anna's biggest supporter – joined the band."

UPDATE 2: SEPT. 6, EVENING- Amanda Knox appeal trial continues. DNA experts to be challenged

Amanda's mother Edda & stepfather Chris Mellas optimistic. Mellas says court should finally "come clean"

UPDATE 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, Seattle time

(Wednesday, 7:45 a.m. in Perugia, Italy)

Chris Mellas updated the West Seattle Herald by email with Tuesday's courtroom session. We inserted clarifications in italics in parentheses. He is currently on his way to court Wednesday. They are nine hours ahead.

We asked him why court meets during weekdays in this juried appeal trial now, when, during the first trial, court was mostly in session Friday nights and Saturdays to allow jurors to go to their weekday jobs.

"Court meeting every day? Because the judge said so. I guess is that the judge wants this done and over with. Perhaps he has other obligations in October, or he is just done with this case. I don't know for sure...but I like that it is moving toward a conclusion at a rapid pace. Amanda likes it too.

"This appeal will likely be done with a decision on the verdict within the last weeks of September, if nothing is added to the schedule.
