Scary moment as 11-year-old Burien boy disappeared for seven hours

An hour and a half later good news came from KCSO: The boy had walked home and was safe.

No word yet on where the little boy was during that time, but chances are his parents are going through a thorough debriefing.

SLIDESHOW: Cal Bannon dances his way into his 91st year

West Seattle -born senior presses onward with travel, dance, & a smile

SLIDESHOW: CLICK ON PHOTO FOR MORE

Last year the West Seattle Herald covered (Calvin) Cal Bannon's birthday at Kenyon Hall. Of course, he was only 90 years old back then, and hard to interview as he seemed to dance non-stop with every gal at the party, but especially Flora Belle Key, barely an octogenarian.

Bannon, a West Seattle High School Class of '39 graduate from the Lowman Beach neighborhood, was at it again, the Energizer Bunny, continuing to dance with a full head of steam. He was celebrating his birthday, (which is Feb. 15) at the Senior Center of West Seattle's Sadie Hawkins Dance Wednesday, Feb. 1. Singer and ivory tickler Lauren Petrie performed, as he did at Bannon's 90th. The ever-popular Petrie is best known in these parts for his performances at the former Corner Inn. A surprise guest performer, West Seattle architect Bret Wiggins teamed up with Petrie.

UPDATE: Same-sex marriage evokes emotions on House Floor; KC Council's McDermott "will marry my partner"

Update for Feb. 8
Just one day after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found it unconstitutional that California voters had unfairly placed same-sex couples to a lower status than heterosexual couples when the ban was passed, the Washington State House passed Bill 6239 paving the way for gay marriage here.

The House vote passed 55 to 43. Next the bill goes to Gov. Gregoire who said she will sign it. Opponents are expected to then collect signatures to place an amendment on November's ballot to strike down this decision.

Opposing amendment

The deadline for turning in signatures is June 6. The bare minimum required is 120,577, or 4 percent of all votes cast in the 2008 election for governor. The state Elections Division suggests turning in 150,000 or more, to cover invalid and duplicate signatures. The average error rate is 18 percent.

Local medical cannabis providers ponder the future

Marijuana is on the mind of elected officials in Olympia these days as Initiative 502 (proposing recreational legalization for those over 21) is discussed ahead of a likely vote by the people in November.

In addition, letters have been sent from Gov. Gregoire and 42 Washington lawmakers asking the DEA to reclassify cannabis as a Schedule 2 drug, which would verify its medicinal value at the federal level, allowing doctors to prescribe and pharmacies to distribute the drug.

The Herald spoke with two local medical cannabis dispensary owners to get their take on how I-502 and reclassification could affect the industry.
