Student veterans & experts grapple with "invisible wounds" of post-traumatic stress

A veterans panel hosted by South Seattle Community College Wednesday, Feb. 22 shed light on the internal crisis experienced by thousands of soldiers returning home with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, and what is understood, and misunderstood, about the phenomena.

About 300,000 veterans leave the military annually. About 10 percent of Persian Gulf War vets (1991) have experienced PTSD, About 10 to 20 percent of veterans have experienced PTSD from Operation Enduring Freedom (in Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn (which marked the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom). Vietnam vets are at 30 percent.

The four panelists included South students, Renee Boettger, USAF 1986 to 1990, Sandra Spencer, US Army, 1986 to 1990, David Diltz, US Navy and US Marines Special Operations 2005 to 2001, and the director of campus security, James Lewis, US Air Force 1974-1980. Diltz, of Tukwila, also assists Campus Veterans Coordinator Delores Taylor certifying veteran students' G.I. Bills. Taylor attended the discussion.

Des Moines magician Louie Foxx & comedians shocked & awed Tin Theater audience

While last night's live show at the Tin Theater, 923 SW 152nd St., featured one magician, Des Moines' Louie Foxx, and two comedians, Seattle's Emmett Montgomery and Renton's Mike Coletta, Foxx pulled some jokes out of his hat and the comics had a few tricks up their sleeves to keep the almost sell-out audience of 35 guessing, and laughing too. Theater owner Dan House wore a smile during much of the 90-minute offering.

The chirpy Foxx connected with the crowd by snapping his cowboy whip while blindfolded and holding a beer bottle, at a banana held by a nervous audience volunteer, and, staying with the fruit theme, later made a cantaloupe and at least three oranges appear out of "nowhere" on a small folding table, and creating an action silhouette of a dog consuming a rabbit with his hand puppet shadows. He was caught saying, "My 7 year-old daughter loves this trick" which served to endear the audience.

Barton Street P-Patch will open March 11

The Opening Day Celebration for the Barton Street P-Patch located at the corner of 34th s.w and s.w. Barton Street is March 11. Time TBA.

Through the group's Facebook page Randee Frost writes:

"All beds are a minimum of 100 sq ft and all very close to each other in size. The intent is to give gardeners an idea of how the plots are numbered and where the plots are if offered a plot during phase 12 by the Department of Neighborhoods.

Plots are assigned based on the number of hours contributed during the build. They will be assigned sometime between Monday Feb 27th and March 11 by the Department of Neighborhoods P-Patch program.

We are talking phase 1, tiers 1 and 2. If you don't have enough hours for phase , fear not, phase 2 will be started in the spring with hopes of being ready for a late summer crop. There are about 15 additional plots in tier 3. There is still time to volunteer and be a part of this fabulous new Community Garden and P-Patch.

Randee"
