Burien burglary chase tops police blotter

Burglary suspects lead police in chase
Two Burien burglary suspects lead police on a short high-speed chase from Rainier Avenue in Renton to Tukwila International Boulevard in Tukwila. Local police agencies had been alerted that the Burien burglary suspects were driving a green BMW that had been stolen in Kent.
The high-speed pursuit was halted on South 154th Street in Tukwila which followed protocol. The suspects left the BMW at an apartment complex and fled on foot. An extensive search began just south of Foster High School by a police tracking dog and officers from Tukwila and Renton. The search ended after officers had followed tips from residents who came in contact with the suspects or saw them running through backyards and on streets. The suspects remain at large.

Highline track

It was a well combined track and field meet.
Highline was facing the combined Evergreen/Tyee squad for the all-Highline School District title, with the Pirates being a Class 3A team and Evergreen and Tyee both 2A in a combined Seamount League.
And for this meet, four boys ran with one girl in a combined 3,200-meter run.

Grace Stephans of Highline found herself running the girls portion by herself, and she thus won that event with her time of 13 minutes, 9.58 seconds.

But for the whole race she was either just ahead, equal to or just behind one of the boys runners -- Chinh Nguyen of Evergreen. She was not alone until Nguyen turned on his after burners down the home stretch and finished in 13:05.05.

Derek Ingraham of Tyee won the race in 10:31.25, followed by Highline's Josh Nord (11:08.63) and Zach Todd (11::29.86).

Highline's depth helped it to carry the day, outscoring Tyee, 114-10, and Evergreen, 96-38, on the boys side as Evergreen topped Tyee, 89-10. Highline beat the Tyee girls, 113-16, and downed Evergreen, 106-27. Evergreen outscored Tyee, 61-23.

Kennedy Catholic tops Highline 9-6 to tie for first place

SLIDESHOW

By Kyle Howard

Kennedy Catholic was looking for some revenge against the Highline girls fastpitch team Wednesday, May 2 after losing to them, 16-6, April 5. Kennedy was one game behind Highline and needed this win for the first place tie.

The Lancers' bats started off hot early in the game, scoring one run in the first and six runs in the second. Lancer starting pitcher Kate Lewis threw a great game, going 6 2/3 innings and striking out eight. The Lancers' bats died off a bit after their huge six run second inning.

The Highline Pirates' hitting started out slow, getting shut out in the first four innings but started their scoring in the fifth when Meghan Beswetherwick singled with Nicole Jacobson droving her in with a deep triple over the center fielder's head. Jacobson ended up coming around to score, narrowing Kennedy Catholics lead 8-2. The Pirates picked up one more run in the bottom of the sixth with a single from Taylor Gower, who then came around to score with a double coming from Sierra Flanagan. The Pirates had the bases loaded but were unable to pick up any more runs during the inning.

End of an era for Mt. Rainier and Highline baseball coaches

SLIDESHOW

By Kyle Howard

Plenty of fans and former players turned up to see the final regular season game of Mount Rainier head coach Darrin Rawie and Highline head coach Dave Larson. Larson has coached the Pirates for 17 seasons and Rawie has coached Mount Rainier for 12 seasons. It was also senior night for Highline, as they say goodbye to nine seniors.

Mount Rainier put a run on the board right away with a leadoff home run by Jon Culver to left field. Highline answered back in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. In the top of the fifth with a tie game at 3-3 Mount Rainier’s Logan Wagner had a bit of an embarrassing moment. Wagner hit a solo home run, and after making his way around the bases and being greeted by his teammates he was called out on an appeal by Highline for missing first base, which took away what would have been the go ahead run.

Report: Seattle electricity rate increase could force Nucor steel plant to move

The Puget Sound Business Journal is reporting a Seattle City Light proposal to increase power rates could put Nucor, the steel plant employing 300 people just off the West Seattle Bridge, in a position to move on.

According to PSBJ, the increase of 4.7 percent over the next six years would mean Nucor's Seattle plant would pay the most for power of their 19 U.S. plants, and could encourage their parent company to "invest elsewhere," according to Nucor Vice President and General Manager Matt Lyons.
