West Seattle Kiwanis working to end tetanus

The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.

The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

The West Seatle Kiwanis Club will be at the Farmers Market on Sunday to share information with the public and to raise awareness. All donations for coffee, hot cocoa and tea go towards the Eliminate Project.

Marination's build out at Seacrest Park delayed until end of summer

Winning the right to the concession at Seacrest was apparently the easy part for food vendor Marination. It now looks like they will be delayed with the build out of the space until late summer based on the requirements put in place by Seattle's Department of Planning and Development.

That means for tourists and/or locals on the King County Water Taxi, or people in the neighborhood the return of food and beverage service is going to be a while.

One of the owners, Roz Edison talked to the Herald about what is happening.

"DPD issued their decision on our proposal to convert the building to have it formally established for restaurant use. We all know that it already has been established as a restaurant for the last ten years but it has to go through formal channels to have that building changed. That was the first hold up. What has happened now is that there is actually a second level. After King County does its review of the shoreline master use it also needs to go to the Department of Ecology in Olympia because it does impact the shoreline."

TENNIS: Gregerson bows out at state

RICHLAND - It was a tough stand to take for Alexis Gregerson of Mount Rainier to endure at the Class 4A state tennis tournament beginning on Friday, May 25 at Richland High School and the Columbia Basin Racquet Club.

Gregerson rallied strongly and tenaciously from baseline to baseline before dropping a closely contested girls state tennis singles opener to Leslie Ho of Central Valley. Ho posted a 6-3 first set win before Gregerson turned more tenacious to have her opponent on the verge of a second set defeat, but Ho pounded home key points to escape with a 7-5 triumph in the second set.

Theresa Huang of Skyline then fought off the Ram player 6-2, 6-3, to give the Mount Rainier senior a season-ending defeat. The energy expended in the rough first match came back to hit Gregerson.

Ram player Gregerson ended her tennis career under Mount Rainier coach Tim Lee with this appearance at state after teaming with Shannon Wong in state doubles action last season.

Sammi Hampton of Skyview fought Megan LaLone of Skyview through three torrid sets before emerging with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 championship win.

SLIDESHOW: Giant mural taking shape in White Center

Evergreen campus students painting the north wall of Saar's Super Saver

After the amazing murals that helped transform the White Center community were done during the Spring Clean event on May 19 there was one left to do.

White Center Chamber of Commerce President Mark Ufkes had a vision to have dozens decorate the community but they don't happen all at once. The big one not completed that Saturday was the one on the north wall of the Saar's Super Saver Foods on 16th s.w.

Ray Zombro, Workbased Learning Coordinator and Amanda Schmidt Visual Arts Instructor on the Evergreen Campus took it to the art students and others there to put together a design that would work on that wall.
While many students are taking part after school, "the heart of it is about 8 students from the art club," said Schmidt, " but we've had offers from others at the school."

How much for the booze? Breaking down liquor taxes and a look at local prices

June 1 has arrived, and with it comes the official switch to privatization of liquor sales in Washington State.

In West Seattle, most chain grocery stores have their shelves stocked and two previously state-run liquor stores will reopen as private enterprises (the Westwood Village and Alaska Junction locations).

How do the retail consumer taxes work?
As you check out with a bottle of your favorite spirit from here on out, the receipt will show two separate taxes added to the base price listed on the shelves.

First, all bottles will have a 20.5 percent sales tax applied on top of the list price.

Secondly, a “liter tax” is applied, which works a bit differently. The tax is $3.77 per liter, so a pint (350 mL) will have an additional $1.41 tacked on; a fifth (750 mL) adds $2.83; and a half gallon (1.75 L) is hit with $6.60 on top. So whether you are buying bargain basement or top shelf, the liter tax remains the same based on the size of the bottle.

Below is a sample of what the prices are looking like at the onset from a handful of West Seattle grocery stores (in comparison to prices paid to the state prior to the transition).
