White Center marijuana growing operation busted; charges unlikely

For anyone wondering about a KIRO 7 chopper looming over White Center in the early evening of June 26, they were keeping an eye on a King County Sheriff’s Office bust of a marijuana growing operation on the 9600 block of 16th Ave S.W., according to KCSO spokesperson Cindi West.

West said a search warrant was obtained for the property and deputies discovered a “semi-compliant” medical marijuana growing operation. By semi-complaint, West said the owners had the proper paperwork to grow for medicinal use, but had “a few more plants than they should have.”

Criminal charges are unlikely and deputies will be working with the owners to bring their garden into compliance with state law, West said.

The actual number of plants nor the specific address of the grow operation were released.

National celebrities, local sports teams assist West Seattle-based Free2Luv online fundraiser

The West Seattle Herald recently reported on a new anti-bullying organization started by Alki couple Tonya and Kym Sandis called Free2Luv which you can see here.

The Seattle Mariners organization wrote this emailed to the West Seattle Herald regarding anti-bullying, and this online fundraising effort:

"Through our non-profit foundation, Mariners Care, the Mariners strive to make a positive impact on the quality of life in the Northwest, especially for children. We get hundreds of requests for assistance and support each month and we assist those organizations and agencies that meet our mission. In the case of Free2Luv, the Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders and Storm last year participated in an It Gets Better video. This is an issue that is of increasing concern in our society at large, and we are happy to lend our support to the cause."

The Psychic View: Giving and Receiving

By Marjorie Young

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” That biblical teaching has been quoted for centuries. Yet, I would challenge that philosophy.

For much of my life, I was eager to share whatever I had, including money (of which there was little), but more importantly, myself. Yet, I had an absolute aversion to receiving…even something as innocent as a compliment! This likely stems from my difficult childhood. I desired above all things to control my destiny while keeping on guard against becoming vulnerable to others.

It was not until years later, while living in Japan, that I learned a marvelous lesson. It began under most trying circumstances. I received a seemingly minor injury which rapidly developed into a devastating condition. I experienced pain hardly conceived of before. Desperately going from hospital to hospital, I was able to obtain no relief, other than being dosed with pain medications which proved both ineffective and addictive.

Reality Mom: The List

My friend Wendy dated a man who had a list of criteria that needed to be met before he could consider a woman “partner worthy.” His list contained all such important items such as “red hair” and “big boobs.” He was mildly concerned with the woman’s intellect and wanted her to be smart, but not smarter than him, accomplished in her hopefully technologically based career, but again, not more accomplished than him. Unfortunately for Wendy, she was a flat-chested, brunette technological superstar who was far more intelligent than this man. Actually, let me change that to “fortunately for Wendy.”
I scoffed at this man and vowed to never be so superficial. I went on my merry dating and not dating way until my best friend Jill’s sister scolded me by asking me where my list was.
“What list?” I asked.
“The list of things the men you date must have. It should include, at the bare minimum, everything you have and more.” My blank stare told her I had no idea what she was talking about. “These guys you’re dating… they’re… Well, if they were women you wouldn’t give them the time of day, right?”

LETTER: More information needed on Burien’s 1st Ave. utility charge

On the first of June, I received my Seattle City Light Bill and on it there was a charge I didn’t understand.

It said, “1st. Ave. South 1 Underground ” I called City light billing information asking about this charge but the person I talked to had not a clue what I was asking about or what it could be but she said she would research it and call me back the next day.

Well, the lady did call me back with the information I requested. What she told me I couldn’t believe. She told me the Burien City Counsel had requested that City Light install the utility lines along First Avenue South underground and they also committed the city of Burien to pay the extra cost of this installation.

Now here is the problem with their plan. The City of Burien really didn’t have the money to pay City Light for this work, so they devised this plan where by City Light would just add a charge for EACH KWH used to the utility bill of every resident in Burien to cover the costs of burying the utility cables. Then I discovered that these charges could go on for up to 25 years.

LETTER: Presentation a sham

The animal control presentation at the Burien City Council meeting Monday, 6-18-12 was a total scam.

It is a shame that the Burien taxpayers are paying for this program.

While Mike Martin, Burien city manager, had obviously helped the three that run Burien animal control prepare their Power Point presentation, they didn’t bother to learn the script.

So throughout the presentation, Debra George, the Mark Restaurant owner and owner of CARES, kept looking to Mike Martin to coach her on her presentation. Mr. Martin appeared to know the script better than her.

However, someone at CARES and city hall can’t count. It appears that CARES can’t account for over 280 animals that they took in but didn’t account for what happened to the animals. Monthly reporting on the animals was missing from the presentation. I thought that was part of their required contract with the city.

Then there was the financial information that was also missing. It appears that they are not a registered nonprofit as they have been trying to trick the public into believing. So don’t try to claim that deduction on your income tax, if you donated to them.
