Pets feeling the cold in their aching bones, too

SPECIAL TO THE HIGHLINE TIMES

As we say farewell to a truly beautiful summer, we greet vibrant fall colors and cooler, more humid nights. The cooler weather brings a change to joint comfort in many of our four footed friends.

Just like humans, advancing age, decreasing temperatures and previous injury can cause a flare up of stiff and aching joints. The Labrador Retriever that was excited to go to the park to chase the ball and jump in the lake may be slower to get up after sleeping, hesitant to jump in the truck and may only chase the ball a few times instead of all day.

Cats may not want to jump on the counter, may sleep more or walk stiffly.

Today there are many ways to help increase the comfort and mobility of our most loyal friends. Oral Glucosamine supplements are a good first step. They are most effective when given over the long term and when purchased as a combination product with chondroitin, MSM and other joint enhancers.

Election harassment charge tops police blotter

Burien man who confronted "Reject R-74" campaigner arrested for harassment
King County Sheriff’s detectives arrested a man in connection with a Malicious Harassment case that occurred Sunday, Oct. 14, in Burien when he allegedly tore a “Reject R-74” (referendum on same-sex marriage) sign off of a woman’s car and shoved another woman when she stepped in to help.

Detectives arrested the 23-year-old Burien man at a house in the 900 block of 164 St. SE in Snohomish County just after 10 a.m. Oct.17. The man was booked in the King County Jail for Investigation of Malicious Harassment.
According to the group, Preserve Marriage Washington, which rejects same-sex marriage, the victim, Arlene Mark, 61, was sitting in a Subaru Legacy as she waited to hand out campaign literature to other volunteers at a Safeway in Burien. A man approached her vehicle and tore off a Reject R-74 campaign poster taped to the side of her car and stomped on it. Mark claims the man screamed at her and shouted "vulgar profanities."

SLIDESHOW: Thomas Jefferson (7) @ Mt Rainier (23) 10-12-12

Mount Rainier celebrated its homecoming by posting a 23-7 victory over nearby South Puget Sound League North Division rival Thomas Jefferson.

"The guys came together and realized they can do it (win)," said Mount Rainier Rams head coach Tremain Mack after this team's first win of the year. "And we'll only lose a few guys, so they're young."

So Mack forsees a better future for his Rams, who host Emerald Ridge of the SPSL South at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26. They finish with a "crossover" game against an SPSL South team with an equal finish Thursday, Nov. 1.
"We'll see what we can do," said Mack. "They're good kids and can play with anyone."

What the Rams did against the TJ Raiders was open the scoring with 37 seconds left in the first quarter.

Amani Brown ran the ball up the middle to score from the 3-yard line, capping off an eight play drive from the Mount Rainier 30.

Rain and a strong wind struck shortly after that but it did not stop the Rams from scoring a field goal with 5:15 to go in the second quarter.

Alberto Cervantes booted his 26-yard attempt through the uprights going into the teeth of the wind hitting the west side of the stadium.

SLIDESHOW: Football - Kennedy (56) @ Highline (6) 10-19-12

Highline came close to making a game of it early, but the Pirates still wound up with a lopsided 56-6 loss at the hands of Kennedy Catholic.
When the score of Friday's game was only 14-0, Highline drove all the way to the Kennedy 2-yard line before Pirate quarterback Erik Anderson was stopped at the line of scrimmage on a fourth down and one yard situation.

The Pirates also drove to the 10 in the second quarter before a 26-yard field goal attempt by Danny Garcia was blocked and fell into the hands of JFK's Zach Nobmann.

Nobmann ran it all the way to the Kennedy 40, setting up a touchdown that made it 28-0. Highline did not score until it was down 35-0 and the state No. 4-ranked Lancers were well on their way to the win.

The Pirates started off on the wrong foot, losing the ball on a fumble on their first play from scrimmage only six seconds into the game. Kennedy scored its first touchdown on the very next play as Cole Madison hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass. The point after touchdown attempt by Colin Cossette was good to make the score 7-0 only 12 seconds into the game.

Police Blotter Week of 10-22-12

What do we do with these?
On Oct. 12, sometime after midnight, unknown burglars broke into Youngstown Cultural Arts Center on Delridge Way S.W. and stole four computer servers from the boiler/mechanical room. Possibly confused by the technology or disappointed the servers would not be able to run video games, the burglars dumped three against the east wall of the center and a fourth was found at some nearby tennis courts.

Sports memorabilia disappears
Unknown suspects broke into a home on the 2500 block of S.W. Trenton St. on Oct. 9 sometime during the workday and stole an estimated $20,000 worth of personal items from the victim, including two very rare pairs of Air Jordan basketball shoes. Just around the corner, on the same day, someone stole an autographed Ken Griffey Jr. baseball and engraved Griffey photo from a 22nd Ave S.W. home.

Taco theft
Someone broke into a mobile “taco truck” on the 5400 block of Delridge Way S.W. on Oct. 11 and stole the fixings to make tacos and a microwave oven.
