UPDATE: Largest mural in White Center dedicated by student artists

Students from Evergreen Campus near White Center created the art

As the West Seattle Herald reported this past spring students from White Center's Evergreen campus, comprising three local high schools, began painting a giant mural on the north wall of the new Super Savers Market (formally the Albertson's store, located on 16th Ave. SW and SW 106th Ave in White Center).

That mural (92 feet long) was dedicated Oct. 2 by most of the students involved in its creation and their advisor.

Designed by Evergreen Art Club students, and funded by the White Center Chamber of Commerce, the mural was approved by Greg Saars, new White Center business owner who had just opened the Super Saver Market here. Half of the mural was completed at the end of the school year in mid-June. When Evergreen students returned to school this past September, work began again.

This Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 3 pm, the students and the Chamber will host a celebration of the completion of the almost 100 foot long mural.

Police Blotter Week of 10-1-12

Prowling leads to pinning
On Sept. 20 around 9:30 p.m. a woman entered a parking garage on the 4700 block of 42nd Ave S.W. and started breaking out vehicle windows and rummaging through cars for items to steal. Soon after, police received several calls about a man who had a woman pinned to the ground inside the garage. When they arrived, police found the male victim had the female car prowl suspect under wraps. After police took the suspect into custody, the victim explained how he had just arrived home and was getting into the elevator when he heard a loud crash and, fearing his car was being broken into, stepped back into the garage and saw a woman half inside, half outside the newly busted passenger side window. He yelled at her to stop and she threw a GPS unit (just stolen from his vehicle) at him. The victim grabbed the woman by the arm and coat and pulled her to the ground. The woman attempted to punch and bite the man several times until police arrived. The suspect admitted to police that she was breaking into cars to “get change or something to sell.”

BOYS TENNIS: Bulldogs top tougher Totems

Players stepping up to the challenge pushed Foster to a 5-2 boys tennis victory at tenacious Tyee on Friday, Sept. 28.

Senior singles players Gary Singh and Son Thai were unavailable for action due to illnesses.

"Guys stepped in to do an admirable job," said Bulldog head coach Sopheak Ngeth about his 4-5 Seamount League charges. "The boys that have seen limited action fought hard and our experienced guys played steady."

The first match victory for Foster was a quick, 6-1, 6-2, No. 2 doubles win for Michael Nguyen and Bikram Samra against Marius Tomdyo and Alex Mullin, but Tyee began to show its greater toughness than in past years in the No. 2 doubles event.

Huan Nguyen and Billy Aman swept to a 6-1 first set victory versus the Totem pairing of Jimmy Padua and Anthony Chu. Battling Tyee held a 5-4 lead in the second set before Foster's duo sandwiched two service breaks around a hold of serve to carry themselves to the triumph.

"We kind of started focusing and paying more attention in the second set," said junior Totem Chu. "I also served better."

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Eagles drop tempo

Set ups proved crucial in determining control for a Thursday, Sept. 27, Mount Rainier Lutheran non league 3-1 girls volleyball match win at the Evergreen Lutheran campus in Des Moines.

Evergreen Lutheran dropped to 4-3 overall with a 1-2 SeaTac 2B record.

In a September match at Mount Rainier Lutheran on September 13, the Eagles had prevailed in five hard fought sets against the Hawks.

"The big thing that hurt us over time tonight was that our passing was more inconsistent," said Evergreen Lutheran head coach Allen Ash. "Our setters were all over the place and our coverage was spotty."

In the first set, the Eagles capitalized on superb transitions with the offense and defense to break away from a slim 9-8 lead and forged a margin of 14-8. Six-footer Karissa Kjenstad led good front line attacks that were buoyed by good defense and setter play.

Evergeen Lutheran gradually built up the distance from its opposing team by matriculating the ball over the net for scores to build leads of up to nine points. Leading 20-12, the ebullient Eagles kept the halting Hawks from attacking on the front line to close out the set behind Kjenstad's service game.

UPDATE 2 : RapidRide's first test was a little rough

Morning commute resulted in overcrowded buses and long travel times

RapidRide Line C launched today in West Seattle (and Line D in Ballard) and changes greeted the daily commuters. Metro had teams out during the day helping commuters adjust to the changes. Those teams will be out again throughout the week.

Metro is urging riders to review new printed timetables and route maps – or see them online at metro.kingcounty.gov – and plan ahead to have an ORCA card or fare ready when boarding, especially during the Monday afternoon commute. The Ride Free Area ended in downtown Seattle on Sept. 28 and riders now are required to pay their fare when boarding.

Over the weekend the ORCA card readers and station information panels were not working but that appears to be solved as riders report that all systems are now online.

West Seattle commuter Laura Plough on one of the early runs on Monday said. "So far I think it's really slick. The bus came fast and I paid outside, everything's great."

David Vey said, " I was taking the 54 bus before so if its the same as the 54 it should be fine. I think it's a great idea." He said the change did not affect him.
