Jerry's View: That low tide was a high point for me

I have had my experience with minus tides so I don't plan to join the throngs on the Puget Sound beaches next week at Seahurst Park. There will be hundreds of people walking the wet sand with lanterns and flashlights.I have talked to several divers who explore the bottom of Puget Sound and know there is a 20-foot boat on a trailer out there near the Salmon Creek sewer treatment pumps.

I don't know how it got there.

Several years ago a bunch of Highline - West Seattle guys decided to rent a 30-foot cruiser and play a lot of poker on Puget Sound. I was there.

We rented the boat, took it through the Ballard Locks and headed for a bunch of pilings our captain knew about near Indianola, just north of Bainbridge Island. We found some old pilings left from an historic dock. We happily tied our cruiser to them and got our game started.

It was a sunny afternoon; we were in high spirits ( that too ). The game was not going well for me. I was down 40 bucks and whining about my poor luck. At about 8 p.m we fixed some sandwiches and a few more libations.

Police Blotter Week of 12-3-12

Another open house scout?
On Nov. 15 a TV was stolen from a vacant home on 45th Ave S.W. and the real estate agent listing the home suspected two women who attended a recent open house event. Ten days later, a home for sale on the 1000 block of California Ln. S.W. was ransacked as well, and the real estate agent told police she recalled a “recent lookie-loo” (white male in his thirties with dark hair, driving a maroon Acura) she showed the house to who gave her “the creeps.” A window was used to access the home and the agent wondered if someone might have unlocked the window during a showing.

SLIDESHOW: Tom Salle's 'Meat the live butcher' opens to a crowd

Meat the live butcher, the artisan butcher shop owned former Bernie and Boys Tom Salle opened on Dec. 2 and was crowded with customers almost immediately. The shop kept up the pace all day, according to Salle, who was just relieved to finally get the shop open after many months in development.

The shop at 9432 16th Ave. SW is in the former Benton's Realty location and offers beef, pork, sausage, and coldcuts and cheese but right now no poultry. Salle said he would be bringing in chicken and lamb sometime next week and would like to get going on turkey parts with his new computer controlled smoker soon. Over time Salle said he would bring in buffalo, sauces, and seasonings. Specialty packages will also be available.

Walls in the shop are decorated with dozens of news clippings, photos and right in the middle a photo of Tom's father Bernie who started it all.

SLIDESHOW: Hometown Holidays underway in the West Seattle Junction

Despite cold, and rains heavy enough to shut down the West Seattle's Farmers Market a little early the West Seattle Junction got their Hometown Holidays effort underway with community greeters at the corner of California Ave. and Alaska Street, Santa across the way at City Mouse Studio on Alaska Street hearing kids Christmas wishes, and The Wagon Ears Belgian Draft Mules giving people rides in a carriage around the Junction. The Mules will be back on Dec. 16 from 11AM to 3PM.

The greeters out in front of Key Bank will be there again the next two Sundays Dec. 9 and 16 from 11am to 3pm with face painting, Holiday Raffle entries and information.

You can bring the kids for professional Santa photos on December 9, 16 from 11AM-3PM. The Junction Association will donate 100% of your suggested donation of $15 or more to West Seattle charities.

The Junction has "Shop Late Thursdays (open till 9PM) every week through Christmas which includes the West Seattle Art Walk, December 13.

Starting it off Right: Ballard boys basketball buries the Cleveland Eagles in first game of the season

By Christopher Duclos

Update: Ballard Athletics sent us this great video of one of the night's big plays: a pass from Raymond Owens to Nate Rauda to Seth Berger for a slam dunk. Watch it here.

Original: Ballard boys basketball opened their season Friday night, Nov. 30, against non-conference opponent Cleveland high school.

Prior to tip off, a moment of silence was had for Ballard High world history teacher and former basketball coach John Nygaard. Nygaard, 43, died in his home Thursday, Nov. 29, after being out sick this week with pneumonia. He was loved by his students and those he coached at Ballard High School. His untimely passing was unexpected and brought sadness to those close to him. A couple of the players could be seen wrapping arms around each other during the silence.

On the court, the boys from Ballard were stout, keeping Cleveland under control as they outscored the Eagles in 3 of the 4 quarters. The final quarter, Ballard was outscored 19-18, but by then it didn't matter.

Is this bad art?

Right now, the Nordic Heritage museum is full of bad art.

All over the walls, from floor to ceiling, are a total of 1,000 birch board pictures. And they are all manner of cheesy, kitschy and, in some cases, just plain terrible.

Or are they?

That’s the question posed in the new exhibit at the Museum, “Bad Art? 1,000 Birch Board Pictures” by collectors and exhibit owners, Borghild Håkansson and Staffan Backlund, who are both from Sweden.

“There has always been an elite which has determined what is good culture and what is bad culture and what is good taste and bad taste,” said Backlund, who revealed something of an anti-elitist streak during conversation. The exhibit, he said, is in small part a way to be subversive and give the art world a “kick in the butt.”

A letter to a sister: Kay Trepanier's tribute to Peggy Munsen

Peg Munsen, the sister of well known Kay Trepanier, lost her life in a tragic fire that happened in her home Nov. 24. Trepanier wrote a letter to her sister after her passing and we share it with you at her request. A service for Munsen will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Thursday Dec. 6 at 1pm and a reception will follow.

Dear Peg:

It’s hard for me to write this letter to you – but I have to because we have so many shared memories and I still can’t believe you are gone.

When Fireman Ernie called me to advise me of the fire at a house in White Center and that my sister hade succumbed, I told him no, you were alive and well.  He kept talking and I kept saying is this some kind of joke.

But now I know you are gone, and I am heartbroken, just as you would have been if the situation had been reversed.
