Get your fill of Nordic films at Nordic Lights Film Festival

If you ever wanted to indulge in Nordic film, you'll have your chance this month.

From Jan. 18 to 19, at the SIFF Film Center in Seattle Center, more than a dozen films from all five Nordic countries will be screened as part of the Nordic Lights festival, an annual event organized by the Nordic Heritage Museum. 2013 marks the fourth year this has been done.

It all begins on Friday, when the event opens with a reception at SIFF at 6 p.m., and follows up with a feature at 7 p.m. "Beyond," the opening film, is directed by Pernilla August and stars Noomie Rapace of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fame. It's a Sweden-set drama that revolves around a young woman's experiences growing up in a home of abuse and alcoholism.

But if drama isn't your taste, you might find solace in the family-friendly animated feature, "Moomin and Midsummer Madness," which opens up the festival at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. (Moomins are supposed to be trolls, but they look more like pearl-colored hippos.)

‘Don’t let evil win. Keep fighting.’

As the parents and siblings of the 20 children killed at the Connecticut elementary school grieve their unfathomable loss, a Burien public official says she knows how they feel.

On Feb 12, 1998, Southwest Suburban Sewer District commissioner Susan (Suzy) Genzale’s 16-year-old son, Anthony William Genzale was murdered.

Known by everyone as “Moosh,” Anthony’s mother remembers him as a born salesman, an ace diver, and a hilarious comic.

Genzale is adamant that this story not be about her; that she doesn’t come off as a hero.

But she feels compelled by the school shooting to talk about her and her family’s journey in hopes it will help others facing similar tragic circumstances.

“It never gets better, it just gets different,” Genzale declared. “You learn to cope.”

She urges the parents and siblings, “Don’t let evil win. Keep fighting even though it is so hard.”

A defining moment came for her three months after her son’s death at the trial sentencing when she confronted her son’s killer and told him, “You will not take another thing from me. My family will survive this. We will learn to stay together. We will find joy. We will keep Anthony’s memory alive.

SCS boys fall to CWA

UNIVERSITY PLACE - Consistently converting opportunities turned into a liability in a Seattle Christian 59-52 Nisqually League boys basketball loss to Charles Wright Academy in the Tarrier Dome on Saturday, Jan. 5.

From the outset, the battle ebbed and flowed with Seattle Christian (4-3, 6-5) unable to completely break through its opponent's resolve.

Charles Wright (3-2, 7-2) held the Warrior offense on the perimeter and built up a 10-5 first quarter lead. Spencer Eble scored his game total of six points in the second quarter to help keep SCS close at 14-13.

The Warriors went to war with quickness and defensive traps to fire off five consecutive points capped by Cody Miller's baseline driving basket that had SCS ahead 19-16.

Leading 21-16 with just more than one minute left in the half, Seattle Christian was tied at 21-21 by halftime.

Momentum swings were showcased in the third quarter as Josh Perkinson scored seven consecutive points in front of a Shawn Abe standard 3-point play to complete a 10-0 Warrior run that had SCS ahead 35-26 as 3:12 showed on the gymnasium clock.
