SLIDESHOW: Exuberant Seahawks fans align 188th St. in SeaTac to cheer team buses heading to airport

SLIDESHOW: Click on photo for more, or click on photos in gallery below

The Seattle Seahawks players were cheered on with screams and high spirits Friday, Jan. 4, by hundreds of fans in blue and green giving them a send off. Four airport-bound team buses with the players drove west along 188th St. in SeaTac just off of I-5 across from Valley Ridge Park. The team was off to our nation's capital for their playoff game against the Washington Redskins Sunday, Jan.6., at FedExField.

The fans wore plenty of gear, including jerseys, helmets, and pins, many waving #12 signs to honor the boisterous 12th man that seemed to help the team make it to the playoffs with audience-induced adrenaline, while their ruckus often caused the opposing teams to have trouble hearing their own plays called. Mayor Mike McGinn declared January 4 "Blue Friday", although Seattle fans hoped it would be the Redskins who get the blues.

SLIDESHOW: Sealth stumbles against Nathan Hale and loses 38-43

The Chief Sealth Seahawks come out flat in their post- holiday opener against Nathan Hale and lost in the closing moments 38-43.

The normally scrappy Seahawks looked off their game offensively and defensively. A lack of a fast break and poor shooting doomed them in the closing moments of a closely fought contest.

The Seahawks were well rested and ready for a new year after the Christmas break. But as any sports fan knows taking a break can sometimes stifle momentum, take the edge off, or create rust.

The Hawks energy was apparent Friday night when the Nathan Hale Raiders came into the Hawks Nest at Chief Sealth High School for the first game of 2013.

The speed was there but something wasn’t right.

While the Seahawks held the Raiders scoreless in the first three minutes of the contest they were only able to generate one point of offense. That came from a foul to point guard Trey Brown.

Both teams struggled in the first period and at the buzzer the score was tied at seven all.

Seattle Police finds use of force reasonable in 2010 West Seattle arrest; OPA to investigate

A December 2010 arrest at Westwood Village in West Seattle turned physical and resulted in a bloodied detainee. A Seattle Police Department review of Southwest Precinct officers' use of force found it "reasonable, necessary, and within department policy," according to an SPD press release.

On Jan. 4, a little over two years after the incident, the detainee in that arrest filed a complaint with SPD's Office of Professional Accountability, who will reopen the case for review.

Seattle Weekly's Nina Shapiro covered the unfolding case in detail on Jan. 4, including an SPD dashcam video of the arrest posted to YouTube by the complainant's lawyer (Heads up: the video contains vulgar language and physical violence). Shapiro's coverage can be found here.

Here is SPD's statement on the arrest and OPA investigation:

SLIDESHOW: Kennedy dominates swim meet at Evergreen Pool

By Greg McCorkle

Sometimes schools with smaller teams must pool their resources to compete at an event.

That’s what went on at the Evergreen Pool when Evergreen, Highline, and Tyee joined together to face the always tough Kennedy High School Swim Team.

On this day it was the Kennedy Lancers that showed why they’re so dominant, defeating the other three teams by a combined score of 414-41.

The Lancers could be renamed the Sharks because of their relentless pursuit of every other swimmer in the pool, winning all but one event of the day.

Lancers senior Thane Maudslien is attempting something this year that has never been done in Washington State history by winning a fourth straight state title in the 100 meter butterfly this February at the King County Aquatic Center. Maudslien has won the event in his three previous years for Kennedy.

Highline standout Nate Williams was the only non-Kennedy swimmer to win his event, taking the longest race of the day, the 500 meter freestyle, with a time of 5:17.
