SLIDESHOW: Thompson remains unbeaten, wins 13th straight bout

Normally a patient tactician in the boxing ring, unbeaten "Vicious" Vincent Thompson threw caution to the wind and went for an early knockout on Saturday night.

His plan nearly backfired when his opponent, ex-MMA fighter Giovanni "Bam Bam" Sarran, refused to play patsy and survived the round and the fight.

Though Thompson was tired and spent after his first-round blitzkrieg, he managed to tough out his 13th consecutive professional win in the six-round main event before 1,123 fans at the Skookum Creek Event Center at the Little Creek Casino and Resort in Shelton.

"Vince was trying hard for the knock out and burned himself out," said Thompson's coach Sam Ditusa, a Normandy Park resident. "(That) threw the game plan out the window to box and to take opportunities to box and opportunities if they came for a KO."

Thompson (13-0, 2 KOs) of Federal Way said he wanted to go for the early knockout to please his fans and to quiet those in the boxing game who doubt his power.

"I just wanted to show I have power and I'm here to hurt people," Thompson said.

SLIDESHOW: Mount Rainier wins Regional

PUYALLUP - It took a little prodding and encouragement before Class 4A West Central/Southwest Washington bi-district champion Mount Rainier (25-1) ascended to a 69-50 girls basketball win against No. 7 WCD/SWW Kentridge at the 2013 WIAA Hardwood Classic Regional Championships held at Puyallup High School on Friday, Feb. 22.

With the win the state top-ranked Rams return to the Tacoma Dome for a 9 p.m. first round state match up with Inglemoor on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Tacoma Dome with the hope of improving upon last season's third place finish. Kentridge (14-12) concluded its season.

"They had nothing to lose," stated Ram head coach Bob Bolam. "We knew they would scratch and claw. They had us on our heels for awhile. We had to remind our girls at halftime that they had to work and fight for it. It wasn't just going to be given to us."

Maintaining a slim 37-34 margin with 6:24 remaining in the third quarter, the Rams blew the door down for fifteen consecutive points behind the eight points of Brittany McPhee who closed out with a game-high 29 points including a 13-of-16 achievement from the free throw line.

Jerry's View: "We Create Displays That Sell!"

Right after the big war, which I had won nearly single handed, I left Boeing in spite of their pleas and my promise to never drive my fork lift truck on the soft asphalt portion of the airport runway near the hangar.

And I was looking around for an occupation.

I had three little kids and had once worked after high school at a big department store helping a crew dress windows.

I figured I knew how to do that and printed up some business cards that read Window Dresser; "We Create Displays That Sell".

I handed them out when I walked door to door in downtown Renton, White Center, Des Moines and Burien. I did not go to West Seattle because I was driving a 1928 DeSoto with a leaking radiator and that was a long way from home in case I had to walk.

Wonder of wonders one day I got a call. This man needed someone to glaze the big windows on the street level floor of Seattle's Smith Tower. He also asked me to cover some tables with crepe paper. He was going to sell some things I guess.

Ballard among top bicycling neighborhoods in commuting map

Ballard likes to bicycle, according to Gene Balk, AKA FYI Guy, of the Seattle Times. He put together a neighborhood map based on Commute Seattle's survey of commuters and bicycle commuting estimates from data provider Experian.

While not at the top of the list -- that honor goes to the North University area -- several Ballard-area neighborhoods certainly exceeded the 3 percent city average. As Balk notes, while that may not seem a large percentage of commuters, it's one of the larger rates in the nation, and adds up to more than 11,000 people.

The neighborhoods in question are as follows:

Sunset Hill: 6.54 percent
Ballard: 5.66 percent
Loyal Heights/Whittier Heights: 5.2 percent
Phinney Ridge: 5.43 percent
Fremont: 5.85 percent

Further north and more up the hill, however, neighborhoods begin to fall below the average. North Beach ranks in at 2.84 percent, Greenwood 2.92 percent and Crown Hill a measly 0.39 percent.
