Baseball: Beavers steamroll Monroe, notch first league win against Roosevelt

By Marshall Airey

Ballard vs. Monroe, March 15

Ballard Beavers Varsity blew out Monroe 7-1 on Friday at Whitman Middle School after pouring on four runs in the fifth inning.

Alex Livengood was solid at the plate for Ballard Beavers Varsity. He went 2-3, drove in one and scored one run. He singled in the second inning and doubled in the fourth inning. For all of his work, he was awarded player of the game.

Starter Carl Pearson got it done on the bump. He pitched three shutout innings. He struck out one, walked none and surrendered no hits.

In middle relief, Dash Sklenar looked sharp on the mound. Sklenar held Monroe hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four.

Ballard vs. Roosevelt, March 20

Ballard Beavers fought it out in a long, cold, extra inning game against cross-town rivals, The Roosevelt Rough Riders. Though the Beavers were leading most of the game, Roosevelt scored 7 runs in the 7th to take a 9-7 lead. Burien brothers reach across the spectrum & nurture each other

Many have heard the expression from Tolstoy's opening line in Anna Karenina, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” A visit to the Schwieger family of Burien seems to contradict this, and proves that some happy families are quite happy in their own way.

Gage, 7, has Down Syndrome while his five year-old brother, Alexander, a Mensa member, has tested in the top one percent on the intelligence spectrum for his age. He was given the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities.

As you watch the sibs accommodate each other, and merrily interact, It is hard to avoid the cliche both kids are "special", yet it rings true. Both attend Gregory Heights School. Alexander, or Alex, leaped directly into first grade at age 5. Gage is in second grade. Alex tudors Gage in reading and comprehension, while Gage is protective of his younger brother, appreciative of his help, and dignified while quite aware of the unique family dynamic.

Parents Bob and Anne have their own business, a freight forwarding company, AES Logistics, named for her initials. As parents, and professionals, well, there is that other cliche, their hands are full.

Many burglaries in Ballard, some more successful than others; man attacked for no apparent reason

By Cassandra Baker

9:02 a.m., March 14. 58th block of 24th Ave NW

A restaurant owner called police after he arrived at work in the morning to find that his restaurant had been burglarized overnight. The rear door of the restaurant had been forced open. The burglar also cut the phone lines, turned off all of the breakers in the power box, and damaged the alarm. The safe had been forced open with an electric saw, leaving an odor of burning metal. No fingerprints were found at the scene. The restaurant owner did not suspect anyone of the crime.

1:00 a.m., March 13. 75th block of 24th Ave NW

A burglar with high standards ended up empty-handed. The suspect entered an apartment building storage area and used bolt cutters to cut the latches off of about 20 storage units. The burglar left without taking anything, apparently not having found anything considered worth stealing. The burglar did not leave any fingerprints.

6:19 p.m., March 12. 3rd block of NW 53rd St

The joys of Easter Brunch

By Holly Brown

Easter brunch is one of my all time favorite food holidays. I love the fresh spring fruits and veggies that add color and texture to any Easter spread. Asparagus, citrus, fennel, berries, and cauliflower are fresh and fragrant this time of year! Of course, Easter Brunch is also a great excuse to share three of my favorite dishes from childhood with my friends and family. Stuffed Eggs Au Gratin, Strawberry Crepes, and Banana Bread were always on my mother's Easter table and they remain on mine!

Like many home cooks, I frequently fall into the trap of preparing a dish the way my mother did, without ever questioning why she used a particular ingredient, or prepared something a certain way. Ever since I can remember, my mom made Stuffed Eggs Au Gratin with a can of prepared white sauce and cheddar cheese. While I still love my mom’s classic version, I’ve upped the ante this year with a homemade Béchamel sauce and Gruyere cheese. What a difference! Once you make this Béchamel sauce at home, you’ll find a million ways to use it again in your recipes. The stuffed eggs on their own are also pure decadence!

West Seattle raided by Nathan Hale 5-1

Two teams fighting for the middle of the pack face off at Hiawatha Field in the rain and sleet.

West Seattle scored first in the eighteenth minute by a shot in front of the goal. #5 Luis Santiago took advantage of a crowd that hid him from Nathan Hale’s goalie to sneak the ball into the net. A few minutes later Santiago nearly scored again but the ball was covered by Raider goalie Stuart Long.

The half ended with a 1-0 Wildcat lead, but that was short lived when in the first five minutes of the second half the Raiders scored twice to go up 2-1.

The Raiders added two more offensive strikes and a penalty kick just before time expired to win 5-1.

The Wildcats will play again March 26th when they travel to Rainier Beach.
