Man pinned between potato chip truck and loading bay at Holman Rd QFC

A tragic event took place yesterday at the QFC on Holman Rd: a Lays-Doritos delivery truck driver accidentally ran over a man in his 30s, pinning him in between the truck and the loading dock. The man, who appeared homeless, according to KOMO News, suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

"Witnesses told KOMO Newsradio that the truck driver was backing up to a loading dock at the store and did not see the man. Witnesses also said it appeared that the victim is a homeless man who intentionally got behind the truck as it backed slowly in."

Here's the report from the SPD Blotter:

"Seattle Police and Fire responded to a report of a man pinned between a delivery truck and loading dock early this morning at the QFC on Holman Road NW.

USA Today names Ballard one of 10 best neighborhoods 'tourists haven't found'

In a big "duh" moment, USA Today names Ballard one of America's best 10 neighborhoods that tourists haven't found yet.

Here's what they say in their opening:

"Seattle's historic Ballard neighborhood offers views of the North Pacific Fishing Fleet, the Olympic Mountains and water, water everywhere. Hipsters will find the components they expect of an urban adventure, but Ballard also appeals to beer lovers and trend-seeking shoppers. Factor in its Scandinavian culture, and you've got several reasons to ride the wave."

Today gives some shoutouts to a lot of our local joints. To spare time, let's just list them in bullet point form:

  • Ray's Boathouse and Cafe
  • The Sexton
  • Bastille Cafe & Bar
  • The Walrus and The Carpenter
  • Peddler
  • Populuxe
  • Hilliard's
  • Northwest Peak
  • Hale's Ales
  • Maritime Pacific
  • Reuben's Brews
  • Bad Jimmy's (Imminent, they say)
  • The BalMar
  • Tractor Tavern

REMINDER: Want to design the perfect garden? Sustainable West Seattle has the answers tonight, April 15

The Sustainable West Seattle April Forum "Successful Gardening with Nature Part 2 – Designing the Perfect Garden" is set for Monday April 15.

The forum will be held at 6:00 pm at the West Seattle Community Orchard at South Seattle Community College. You'll find the orchard on the east side of the north parking lot.

Before you start planting a garden, start planning. Successful food gardens are well planned to take advantage of natural features such as sun and shade as well as structural features like walls, concrete and fences. A good plan incorporates not only what you want to grow, but includes the benefits of plant-to-plant interaction, pest control, aesthetics, and ease of gardening.

Where:
West Seattle Community Orchard, South Seattle Community College
When:
6:00 pm Meet and Greet, SWS announcements
6:15 to 6:55 pm - Tour the Orchard with Q & A regarding the orchard plan
7:00 to 8:00 pm - Food from local gardens and drink will be served, followed by a power point presentation with local gardens being shown as well as permaculture design principles being presented. The three dimensional garden will also be described.

Development: Old Nielson Bros. Carpets building being torn down, replaced by parking

Another piece of Old Ballard is fading away as the Nielson Bros. Carpets building (2031 NW 56th St), is being torn down.

Nielson Bros., which closed down back in December, 2012, had been in Ballard since 1946.

In it's place? Street level parking with 27 spaces, according to Department of Planning and Development's Land Use Information Bulletin.

We called up Nielson Bros. and they said Wells Fargo had bought the property. "We believed they were going to continue to lease us, but once it was finalized they gave us the boot within 30 days."

Nielson Bros., which still has a store in Bellevue, Burien and Lynnwood, is still looking for a new place in Seattle.
