Development: 2 and 1/2 Barbers leaves Ballard for Ravenna

As construction of the Ballard Lofts apartments approaches, 2 and 1/2 Happy Barbers has left Ballard for a new spot in Ravenna, on the corner of NE 65th and Ravenna Blvd (502 NE 65th). According to the sign, it's a 10-minute drive East.

If you haven't been in the loop, the Ballard Lofts is the five-story, 72-unit apartment building set to be constructed at 24th Ave NW between NW 64th and NW 65th streets. It's generated some recent controversy because it will be developing over the Viking, a tavern established in 1950 which people either love or hate.

While we don't know for certain the future of The Viking, at least one piece of the story, a well loved community barbershop, has been settled.

If you need to catch up on the story, you can read columnist Peggy Sturdivant's sit down interview with developer Bill Parks here and our initial coverage of the development here.

A happy homecoming surprise caught on video in West Seattle

After being deployed for a year Army First Lt.Edgar Nicolau, surprised his two kids Jamie Gabrielle and Dylan by showing up at Menchies Frozen Yogurt in the Admiral District on Sunday April 14 for an emotional reunion.

The surprise was set up by his wife Jenet Januto who was not certain about his exact return date from the year long deployment in Kuwait. Nicolau has served as reservist for the last 12 years.

Jamie works at Menchies so the surprise was planned to happen when she was distracted. "It was toward the end of her shift and I called her manager prior," said Januto, "He thought it was great."

Januto gathered her whole family, to come to Menchies and meet in the party room there. The plan was for the Lieutenant to come in the back door and just walk up while she was not looking. "She went to the cash register and that's when I signaled my husband, 'come in!'," Januto explained.

SLIDESHOW: Scott DePew and his West Seattle gull friends

Scott Depew is a West Seattle resident who loves to feed seagulls and brought his family down to the beach on Sunday April 14 to do just that.

By Scott DePew

Our daughter has experienced the Duwamish Head and Alki beaches since before she could crawl. We would bring a picnic lunch to our outings, and it is from the sandwich crusts that our family grew into what it is today.

At first we had some friendly pigeons and sparrows. Then came 'little-big squawk', a medium sized black bird with a yellow beak that would return over and over. And then came our favorite friends, the seagulls.

The gulls would gather around us, and would later seem to anticipate our next visit by greeting us before we even found a place on the sand. It wasn't long before a few tried to get our attention from the air by hovering over our heads. And that's when the game started. They would fly toward us from random directions in hopes of getting the bread before another could get there first.

Slideshow: A bus journey through Hailmageddon 2013

The Ballard News-Tribune had just finished covering Grynch and Budo's free concert at Hilliard's Beer (we'll have photos and story up tomorrow) and was just headed home when the clouds seemed unusually dark.

While waiting for the 44 Bus with a few other folks, a lightning flash could be seen up to the north around the North Beach area. One or two seconds passed and we heard thunder.

A young twenty something with gauged ears and his hair pulled back into a ponytail exclaimed, "I've never experienced thunder and lightning in Washington state."

A middle-aged woman with thick-framed glasses concurred. "I'm from Tennessee, we used to see it all the time. But not here."

"Thunder in Ballard ... it's rare," said an older gentleman.

As the bus pulled up, that's when the hail struck.

------------------------

Back in 1990, Westmark Development Corporation filed an application with King County for a permit to construct a 216-unit apartment building to be known as “Emerald Pointe on the Sound” on 9.6 acres of wooded ravine property in then-unincorporated King County, adjacent to Seahurst Park, at 13401 12th Av. SW, near 136th St., in what would become Burien. Burien officially incorporated on February 28, 1993 and assumed responsibility. Westmark believed King County was close to issuing a decision on its application when the project was transferred to Burien, which didn't issue a decision on Westmark's revised application for three more years. Westmark sued for intentional interference. In 2007, the state Court of Appeals upheld a $10.7 million judgment against Burien, plus interest and other expenses. The city's insurance carrier, Washington Cities Insurance Authority paid most of the award.
