Burien Councilmember Jack Block Jr. announces campaign for re-election

Jack Block Jr.'s statement:

Burien Councilmember Jack Block Jr., “The Peoples Voice”, Announces Campaign For Re-election

Jack Block Jr. today officially announced today his bid for re-election to the Burien City Council. Said Block, “Burien’s citizens have an important choice to make this election: maintain the present dysfunctional status quo, or return the Council’s focus to the real needs of Burien’s citizens.

“In the last election, Burien’s citizens trusted me to work in their best interests. I’ve worked hard to repay that trust:

• Voting NO on annexation, when the county tried to balance its budget on the backs of Burien’s citizens.

• Saying NO to the City Manager’s proposal to raise taxes when there were adequate financial reserves to maintain city services.

• Saying NO to City staff’s proposal to extend our current solid waste contract, when putting it out to bid would reduce rates and result in more city revenue.

• Pushing to bring City Council focus to the lack of economic development and address the high number of empty storefronts that line our streets.

Biggest tree in Burien

This massive white oak dominates the side yard of a home on 162nd S.W. It's owners, Rita and Frank Corken, believe the tree to be about 150 years old. Their house was built about 1925. Frank Corken said that if the tree ever toppled, he's afraid the roots might pry up the foundation of his house. And the leaves! In the fall, the amount of leaves that drop is massive, he said, and have to be hauled away. From time to time, passersby ask if they can have their picture taken in front of the tree.

Highline School District will expand middle school athletics program

New sports will be phased in over two years

Information from Highline Public Schools

Highline will add several new sports programs at the middle school level over the next two years, as recommended by the district’s Middle School Athletics Assessment Committee.

Starting next fall, middle school athletes will have the opportunity to turn out for wrestling (Season 3), girls’ soccer (Season 2) and running-conditioning clubs (Seasons 2 and 3).

Cross country, softball and tackle football will be added in 2014-15. Also in 2014-15, to increase the pool of potential coaches, traditional fall and spring sports will swap seasons. Track and field, boys’ soccer, and softball will run in Season 1; volleyball, football and cross country will run in Season 4.

“It has been our mission to improve the connection between our middle and high school programs to ensure strong communication, leveled instruction of basic skills and a belief system that ensures growth and success,” said Director of Athletics Terri McMahan. “Expansion of middle school sports provides the opportunity to rebuild the foundation of our athletics program, involve more students, and galvanize the entire secondary program.”

SLIDESHOW: Seattle Christian snags second place

SUMNER--This time there was no coming back.

One day after overcoming a 2-0 deficit to beat Okanogan, 4-3, in the Class 1A Washington state boys soccer semifinals, the Seattle Christian boys soccer team fell behind the Chelan Mountain Goats, 3-1, by halftime of the championship and wound up losing by that score.

Saturday's loss to Chelan in the final left the Warriors in second place, but Friday's win over Okanogan that earned a top two finish was the one to remember.

"It was an unreal game, an unbelievable game," said Seattle Christian head coach David Peters after his team beat the Bulldogs on the Sunset Chev Stadium turf in Sumner. "Wow. The kids have a lot of heart. They work together, and they know how to play this game. They never give in."

Okanogan wasted no time taking the early lead on the Warriors.
Justin Rivas did the scoring honors on both goals that added up to the 2-0 lead.

The first came with 6:10 elapsed in the first half as he dribbled his way past Warriors keeper Conner Fremmerlid and drilled the ball into the left back corner of the empty net.

Psychic View: A Haunting Swiss Adventure

By Marjorie Young

I recently returned from Switzerland to visit my ‘second family.’ It was a memorable trip many reasons…including an unforgettable sojourn to a reputedly ‘haunted’ manor. My friend’s friend, ‘Alain’ and his relatives have resided on the postcard-perfect property for several generations, but its history goes back well over two centuries. Alain knew of unsettling disturbances dating from his great-grandmother’s time, and had personally undergone a distressing encounter some years before. Hearing of my psychic abilities, Alain requested I visit his home.

Though I’ve done numerous psychic readings and healings, I’ve only attempted one previous ‘ghost investigation’ in my own neighborhood. Therefore, I was more than eager to explore a far older site with an intriguing past. My friends and I gathered at Alain’s residence; a sprawling domicile in a pastoral setting. As always with any consultation, I had received no information whatever concerning the house or its history.
