Howden-Kennedy Funeral Home will stay in West Seattle; New location finalized

Pushed out by development, new location on 35th Ave. S.W. will eventually become a new facility

The Howden-Kennedy Funeral Home has been helping grieving families put their loved ones to rest in West Seattle since 1920, and with news that a massive apartment/retail project is coming to the Fauntleroy Triangle and taking over the land where they reside, the future of West Seattle’s oldest funeral home was in limbo.

That’s until now.

Stuart Johnston, office manager at Howden-Kennedy, confirmed the family-owned business will move to 7601 35th Ave. S.W. (just south of Mars Hill Church, at the intersection of 35th and S.W. Ida St) over the next handful of months. They are required to be out of their Triangle location by Sept. 1.

Their new location is comprised of a private residence and barber shop and Johnston said a brand new facility will eventually be built at the location, but wished to assure the community there will be no disruption in services. Ownership, phone numbers, services, existing contracts … all will remain the same.

“We’ve been part of West Seattle for 70 years (as Howden-Kennedy) and that’s the way we want to stay, supporting West Seattle families,” Johnston said.

West Seattle's Kyle Jensen wins award in youth film festival

Some people are just naturally creative and explore their talents at an early age. Kyle Jensen is one of those.
You may remember that he and his friend Asa Beuhler built a roving "moonbot" in November as part of the Lunar X Prize competition. They were the only finalists in the Pacific Northwest.

Now he has won an award from the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY). His short film, "Growth Ray", earned him the "New Talent Award" in the 12-and-under category.

NFFTY is the world's largest festival dedicated to young filmmakers, from ages 22 on down. The youngest filmmaker ever selected in it was 7, although Kyle was the youngest selectee this year, having been 9 when he made the film. Over 200 films were screened, from directors in 20 countries.

"Growth Ray" is an eight-minute sci-fi comedy that takes place throughout Seattle. Other West Seattle children in the cast are Asa Buehler, Violet Watterson, and Max Scearce.

Catch up with Adam: Relay for Life still seeking teams

Adam Evans is the Ballard then-freshman who ran/walked continuously for 24 hours during last year’s Relay for Life. Asked what he plans for an encore, team captain Adam Evans answers, “Not that.”

Although this will only be his second year participating in the Relay for Life of Northwest Seattle Evans has been participating with his family at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Mt. Tahoma High since he was in grade school. His team sport at Ballard is Track and Cross-Country but in truth Evans has always loved to run.

Relay for Life of Northwest Seattle 2013 will return him to one of his home tracks; the June 1-2 event will take place on the Whitman Middle School field. Last year’s goal of 24-hour motion was very much a tribute to an aunt who had died earlier in the year. For 2013 Evans is enlisting fellow track teammates, and has set a personal goal of getting pledges of $2,000. His strategy will be to ask everyone that he meets.

Interview: Ballard lawyer talks about pioneering case on child pornography

On January 24, the New York Times Magazine published an article entitled “The Price of a Stolen Childhood,” which follows the story of two child pornography victims and how they are seeking restitution for the crimes done on them in the past. Both victims, who have thousands of images of them being traded online, have struggles ordinary people do not. Though the original crimes are long done and settled -- scarring events by themselves -- they must live with the knowledge that anyone they meet may have seen their images online.

One of those victims, going by the pseudonym of Nicole in the story, was forced to make pornography when she was a child by her biological father, and now her images are some of the most highly sought after. She is represented by a Seattle lawyer who has lived in Ballard since 1982, Carol Hepburn. Hepburn’s pioneering case, which has become national in scope, seeks to gain restitution from people who download Nicole’s images for the psychological damage they have done to Nicole.
