No Boundaries exhibit at Burien Community Center through September

Press release:

The Burien Community Center is thrilled to be hosting No Boundaries 2013, Beginnings & Beyond until the end of September 2013, in the community center lobby.

In early 20th century, German doctor Hans Prinzhorn, and French artist Jean Dubuffet opened the eyes of the art world by studying the art of psychiatric patients. A series of following art movements-abstraction, fauvism, cubism and dada-celebrated the ideas of artistic outcasts and underrepresented groups.

In turn, Prinzhorn and Dubuffet’s original ‘Outsider Art’ genre expanded to include a broader spectrum of artists, and moved to the forefront of international attention.

No Boundaries originated 21 years ago when Christine Burgoyne, with Very Special Arts of Washington, organized and curated the first Northwest touring exhibit for artists with disabilities.

Very Special Arts of Washington Alumnus Shariana Mundi and Robert Frey are continuing the tradition with this traveling exhibit, thanks to the generous support of 4Culture in honoring and supporting artists with disabilities, both Outsider artists and professional artists of many years.

Reelin' in the years: Charlie Ganong reflects in prep for Evergreen HS Class of '73 Reunion

Evergreen High School Class of 1973 40-Year Reunion Weekend, July 26th-28th

By Charlie Ganong

I can't believe it's been 40 years since high school—or the Stone Age, as it is often called. Just yesterday we were sporting shag haircuts (girls and boys) and bellbottoms, grooving to KJR and Colorful KOL, hanging out at Herfy's or cruising Alki. A summer for the ages, it was a brief, shimmering season, one last chance to kick up the magical sands of adolescence before diving into the daunting, uncharted waters of the adult world.

Soon enough, we would scatter to the four winds, beyond the familiar turf of White Center and Burien, boldly venturing to the very edge of the earth itself—to an alluring, mysterious and exotic place known as Southcenter.

But our snug, placid world was about to get crazy in a hurry. Although the Vietnam War was being handed off to the Vietnamese (sound familiar?), the Watergate scandal would soon explode, jailing or exiling our political leaders and forever tarnishing our faith in government. Meanwhile, crisis in the Mideast (sound familiar?) sent gas to the unheard-of-price of 45 cents a gallon—bringing chaos to the pump, and three new words overnight into our vocabulary: Datsun, Honda and Toyota.

Central Ballard Residents Assoc. to discuss Ballard Commons Park at meeting tonight

The Central Ballard Residents Association is tonight (Thursday, July 11). They will be discussing the Ballard Commons and how best to take care of it.

As usual, the meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Swedish Hospital Ballard Campus, Conference Room A on the main floor of the hospital, to the right after going through the entrance on 5330 Tallman Ave.

In an email, CBRA Chair Mike Kahrs writes, "The Ballard Commons has become the active center of central Ballard. To protect, promote and utilize the commons for all our citizens, it has been suggested that there should be a non-profit called 'Friends of the Ballard Commons.' What exactly are its contours including structure, goals and aspirations are very much open for discussion. Please join us in a communal conversation about the nature of the Commons and how such an organization can make it a better place for all who use it."

Pet of the Week: Mr. Bones is an experienced climber

Bridget Cussen and Tom Dancs are the owners of Mr. Bones who is a pure bred Redbone Coonhound they got from the Factoria Humane Society in 2009. Tom saw him online and Bridget went to see him. "We were originally looking for a Vizsla," said Tom, "the original Hungarian bird hunting dogs, because my family is Hungarian, then we saw him and researched coonhounds a little bit. Our main criteria were that they be good with children and that they cover mileage and that they be pretty hypo-alllergenic."

Mr. Bones, who came with that name, eats a very specific diet of Acana pet food. "It was the only food he would eat. He wouldn't eat anything when we first got him. It turned out he's high maintenance."

Treats are beef liver dog treats from Trader Joes.

The couple love to go climbing and hiking and Mr. Bones has proven to be an excellent fit for their very active lifestyle. Dancs is a former technical mountain rescue expert, which served him well in their first trip with the dog.
