EPA focusing on industrial stormwater compliance, targeting a serious threat to Puget Sound water quality

Information from the EPA

As part of ongoing federal and state efforts to restore Puget Sound, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is announcing enforcement actions against four Seattle-area companies for discharging industrial stormwater in violation of the Clean Water Act.

“By focusing our efforts on industrial stormwater compliance, EPA and the Washington Department of Ecology are tackling one of the top environmental threats to Puget Sound,” said Ed Kowalski, director of EPA’s enforcement program in Seattle. “These focused actions help bring us closer to restoring the health of Puget Sound.”

Stormwater runoff from industrial sites, if not properly controlled and treated, can transport toxic chemicals, heavy metals, excess sediment, and nutrients, directly into Puget Sound and waterways. These pollutants harm the Puget Sound ecosystem and marine life. EPA and Ecology help ensure compliance and enforce clean water rules at permitted and unpermitted industrial stormwater sources to reduce these pollutants in Puget Sound.

Police Blotter Week of 8-26-13

Technology comes through in iPhone recovery
On Aug. 15 two men were walking along the 2600 block of S.W. Thistle St. around 2:30 p.m. when they were approached by another male who asked to use one of their phones to call his aunt. One of the teens pulled out his phone, asked for the aunt’s number and turned the phone to speaker mode so the stranger could talk, but he could maintain possession. While the phone rang, the stranger turned thief grabbed it from the victim’s hand and pulled out a folding knife to ensure it became his. The groups separated and the victim returned to his mother’s house to call 911. When police arrived they tracked the phone using GPS technology and found it pinging at 16th Ave. S.W. and S.W. Roxbury. With a suspect description in hand, police responded to the intersection and found a possible match. They detained him while the victim was transported for a show up. The victim confirmed he was the thief, described unique markings on his phone, and police searched the suspect’s belongings. They found that very phone and a folding knife in his possession and the suspect was hauled off to jail.

My Recent Tuneup

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

Every age has its advantages and disadvantages. Life is like that. There is no free ride, as they say. Any generation that hasn’t learned about that is in for a rude awakening. As I have often remarked, “Life is not fair.” But who determines what is fair and what isn’t fair? Being inside our own skin we look at life as surrounding our own selfish desires. It isn’t until we learn to appreciate community that we can gain a true perspective on it all.

All those who have contributed to our well being are remembered—loving parents, friends, partners, offspring and teachers who went that extra mile to give us a boost in life. Gradually, we turn this all around by being the ones who give younger family members and our friends that same kind of boost. Who are your supportive friends? Who are the professionals on whom you depend? I have learned to depend upon my doctor through times of physical downturn. I joke about wondering if all the specialists whom I have visited ever talk together and combine all the pieces of information that each gathers about me—like a human jigsaw puzzle.

Meeting tonight to discuss development of four-story apartment building

There will be a design review meeting tonight at Ballard High School, 6:30 p.m., to discuss the construction of a four-story, 27-unit apartment building at 1436 NW 62nd St.

It will replace a single family structure at the same place.

The developers, Playhouse Design Group, say the objective is to provide affordable housing in Ballard, a neighborhood where apartment prices are skyrocketing. The apartment units will all be studios.

The building will provide no parking for residents, as it is in the Ballard Hub Urban Village and is close to transit options. There will be bicycle and scooter parking in front.

You can read more about the design in a packet found here.

Meeting details:

Date: Monday, August 26, 2013

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Location: Ballard High School
1418 NW 65th St

Fish stories and pangs of hunger

The other day my housekeeper, Paulette Joy Lovely, (honest, that is her real name) was at Lincoln park in West Seattle and was astounded by the huge number of fisher folk on the shoreline fishing for salmon. Men, boys, women, grampas, grammas, all lined up with casting rods attempting to bring home fresh caught Pink Salmon or whatever else might be swimming by.

Most were using spinning rods and casting colored spoons while standing on the bank though there were also a bunch of boats cruising out of reach of the shoreline anglers.

She counted 70 people on the bank thrashing the saltwater to a froth.

She even spotted an eagle cruising overhead watching for dinner and took a picture of it.

Paulette Joy Lovely has a son who is a fishing guide on the Columbia River near Vancouver, where she has caught huge steelhead when floating with him. She's very helpful to me too. I'm hooked.

Fishing was my passion early on.
