Foster takes down Evergreen 25-19

By Jeremy Martin

With a bright Hunter’s moon rising above Foster high school, a nearly packed house and an unquestionably crisp breeze rustling around the field, the Bulldogs homecoming match against Evergreen was nothing if not festive.

After four quarters of high octane football it was the hosts and its bleacher full of fans that were able to celebrate a 25-19 victory on an autumn night that couldn’t have been more perfect.

But the night may not have been so joyous for the Bulldogs if it weren’t for the heroics of two players.

Trailing 19-17 with 44.9 seconds remaining, Foster quarterback Randy Tippins took the shotgun snap from the Wolverine 35 yard line, reared back and heaved a moon shot to Patrick Straight who was streaking wide open down the right sideline.

Straight pulled in the pass and ran his way into the end zone as well as into

Bulldog history as the pass and catch duo put up a night-long performance that few in attendance will ever forget.

The game winning catch was just one of two deep scoring strikes for the pair, the other coming on a 40 yard out rout in the second quarter.

SUSTAINABLE BURIEN, GMO Foods: What are we eating?

October 21, 2013, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Elliott Bay Brewhouse & Pub, 255 SW 152nd St .

GMO stands for "genetically modified organisms," and foods that contain ingredients with GMOs are considered GMO foods.

Genetically modified food has quietly become second nature in the U.S. , and it may surprise you just how many foods you are eating that you never knew contained a genetically modified ingredient.

Experts say 60% to 70% of processed foods on U.S. grocery shelves have genetically modified ingredients. If this shocks you, a new USDA-funded survey shows you're not alone. Attend this presentation to learn more and to ask questions about genetically modified foods.

Trudy Bialic, Director of Public Affairs/Editor for PCC Natural Markets, will be our featured speaker. Trudy has spoken extensively on GMO Foods and PCC is known for their diligence in selecting non-GMO foods to selling in their stores.

This presentation is being sponsored by Sustainable Burien.

Bauhaus Coffee and Books finally opens up in Ballard

For months, the corner space where Epilogue Books used to sit has sat empty, forlorn, with a sign promising that Bauhaus Coffee and Books was "coming soon" but with nary a movement inside.

Today, passersby may have noticed a new story at the corner of 20th and Market. The space has come to life and Bauhaus is in action.

For the Ballardite not in the know, Bauhaus had been a Capitol Hill institution for 20 years on the dot, from Oct. 5 1993 to Oct. 5 2013. But make no mistake, the Ballard location is an addition not a replacement, and the Capitol Hill saga will continue as they reopen in a different location in (hopefully) November.

Meanwhile, Cap Hillers can make the journey to the Northwest corner of Seattle, in Ballard, where the new Bauhaus looks a lot like the old Bauhaus. A large open space with lots of tables and seating, old books and encyclopedias, the Ballard Bauhaus promises to produce the same old atmosphere.

It will be held at the venerable Bad Albert's (5100 Ballard Ave) on Oct. 30, 4-10 p.m. The party will feature flights of seasonal vodkas and their flagship product Cherry Bounce, newly designed cocktails made with liquors from local distilleries, live music and a chance to meet the proprieter: "the gregarious, outspoken and often profane Lexi.
