Alki Bike and Board takes on a new image

Biking and boarding fish in the new design

The venerable Alki Bike and Board thought it was time for a change to their look so they completely revamped their logo and put up all new store signage last week.

The logo developed by Bill Reiswig of West Seattle features Salmon on a bike and on a board with the Alki Lighthouse, beach and mountain scene in the back ground.

"We consider our business salmon friendly so this is a fitting logo for Alki Bike and Board," owner Stu Hennesy said.

REMINDER: Admiral District Trick or Treat event is back with an emphasis on fun

One of the safest trick or treat options you can take (and best for little kids) is back this year on Halloween itself from 3pm to 6pm as the Admiral District merchants open their treasure chests of candy.

Speaking on behalf of the merchants, Brent Amacher (State Farm Insurance) said, "Folks will have their signs on the front of the business. We have a strong tradition in the neighborhood and the turn out has gotten bigger each year. We are expecting to have at least the same level of participation as last year. And this year, it's happening on Halloween (as opposed to the Friday prior)."

In years past there were other aspects to the event but the merchants chose a more streamlined version for this year so kids could visit the most places and get what they came for, more delicious candy.

You can keep up with Admiral District events via their Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/AdmiralDistrict

You Are What You Eat: Savoring the abundance of fall

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

Leaves are swirling around in the garden, which means it’s time to pick my fall harvest before the weather turns nasty!

Here are some ways to use the abundant fruits and vegetables you’ll find in the Pacific Northwest in the fall:

  • Asian pears: The wonderful, crunchy and apple-like texture of these fruits is best fresh in salads, or baked, where they stand up very well.
  • Beets: These great root vegetables will keep for months in your refrigerator. Try them in a beet salad with blue cheese and hazelnuts or walnuts. Use plain oil, vinegar and fresh basil to flavor.
  • Brussels sprouts: Brussels sprouts will be sweeter after the first frost. Roast or stir fry to let their nutty flavor shine through.
  • Cabbage: Nothing keeps as well as cabbage, and it’s great in salads.
  • Carrots: A true winter staple, carrots are a tasty addition to your favorite marinara sauce. Or try the glazed carrots below.
  • Greens: Get all the great vitamins you need with spinach, mustard greens, kale, collard greens or beet greens.

Puget Sound nonprofits announce plans for neighborhood radio stations

Public meeting will introduce applicants Oct. 15

In the new age of media and information-overload, the blizzard of choices means loyalty among consumers can be a difficult thing to get and maintain. However, this has not deterred the resolve of fifteen local nonprofits and universities, who are ready to apply for low-power FM (LPFM) radio licenses to serve Seattle's neighborhoods.

As we reported earlier, there's a group that is looking to start a station up in Ballard, led by Ballard High School teacher Eric Muhs.

These community groups will be at a public event today at noon at Pike Place Market to present their vision of what low powered FM can do for communities around Seattle. A map of neighborhoods and locations (seen above) will also be available.

A list of the applicants can be found at: http://community.brownpapertickets.com/Doers/radio.html. Seattle-based Brown Paper Tickets is assisting these nonprofits in their application, and has helped eligible groups across the country learn about the opportunity to own their own radio station, as part of it’s National Make Radio Challenge.
