West Seattle loses heartbreaker in overtime to Ingraham 12-6

By Jeremy Martin

For West Seattle High School, Friday night’s gridiron tilt against Ingraham began a season ending three week stand at the South West Athletic Complex.

The game also represented another difficult learning experience for the young Wildcat Club as the team dropped a 12-6 overtime heartbreaker to the Rams.

Emmery Porter scored his second rushing touchdown of night on Ingraham’s first overtime snap, a 25 yard draw up the middle.

The Wildcats had led for three quarters and seemed to be on their way to its second win of the season until Porter rattled off a 76 yard touchdown run with only 2:30 left in the game, knotting the score at 6.

Prior to Porter’s long breakaway, the Wildcats missed a field goal that would have effectively iced the contest, however the wide right kick was quickly followed by the massive scoring strike that allowed the Rams to knot the contest and take the game into overtime.

West Seattle parents gather to talk teens and drugs

Over 20 parents of West Seattle students – mostly from Madison Middle School and West Seattle High School – gathered at the WSHS Library on the night of Oct. 10 to share their fears and frustrations with drug and alcohol abuse among teens and brainstorm on possible solutions.

It was a far-reaching conversation, covering several types of drugs (from the most commonly abused pot and alcohol to use of over-the-counter and designer drugs), how they are obtained, where they are used, and how to approach kids who may be experimenting.

The gathering was put together by parents with the aid of the Admiral Neighbhorhood Association and local PTAs and included representatives from Seattle Parks, Seattle Police, Seattle Public Schools and the Admiral Safeway.

The night began with a reality check as one parent shared the story of her child overdosing on an over-the-counter cold medicine that sent the teen to the hospital for a seven-hour stay while battling involuntary muscle spasms and vision problems.

“These kids can buy this at any local store,” she said. “It’s not from a guy in a trench coat.”

Seattle Parks meeting for proposed sculpture installation at Seacrest Park set for Oct. 21

Luna Girls sculpture celebrates West Seattle's history

Information from Seattle Parks

Seattle Parks and Recreation will host a public meeting on Monday, October 21, 2013 to discuss the proposed installation of a sculpture at Seacrest Park. The meeting is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.at Marination Mai Kai, 1660 Harbor Ave. SW. The community is encouraged to attend and learn about the project. Seattle Park’s staff will be on site to answer questions and discuss next steps for the project.

The new sculpture, Luna Girls, created by local Seattle artist, Lezlie Jane is recommended to be installed at Seacrest Park at 1660 Harbor Ave SW. The sculpture will not interfere with existing park use.

The Luna Girls sculpture uses heavy steel to outline the form of three women in 1920s beach attire. The outline format of the sculpture does not obstruct the picturesque views of Elliott Bay and downtown Seattle.

Luna Girls celebrates the history of Luna Park, an elaborate 12-acre amusement park built at Alki in 1907. The amusement park closed in 1913 but its fresh-water and saltwater swimming pools operated until 1931.
