PHOTO: Rainier 'R' partying down in Ballard

Update

The Rainier 'R' sidled up next to King's Hardware and became the target of many an iPhone.

You can see our own photo above.

Did you get a picture with the R?

Original

Ballard will be a part of history tonight as the rebuilt classic Rainier "R" will wind its way through the neighborhood around 6 p.m.

The R will be spotted throughout several neighborhoods today, ginning up excitement for its restoration to its proper place at the old Rainier Brewery. After sitting proudly on the Seattle skyline over I-5 for about 50 years, the original R had been taken down in 2000 and replaced by a green 'T' -- as in Tully's, to mark its roaster in the spot.

Now, with Patrick 'McDreamy' Dempsey taking his leave from Tully's, the new owners have decided to do the right thing by the Emerald City and are erecting the iconic red neon 'R' once more. While the old one is sitting in MOHAI, the new one takes on many of the same attributes -- the same swooshy-looking design -- just with more lights.

UPDATE: High-profile sex offender who fled Canada arrested in West Seattle; Police investigating sexual assault claim

Stanley allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old boy in West Seattle prior to his arrest

Updated story for Oct. 22, 12:45 p.m.

A high-risk violent sex offender who fled Canada and was located in Seattle by authorities on Oct. 17 was arrested in West Seattle in the early morning hours of Oct. 22 for investigation of sexual assault of a teen victim and harassment.

Michael Sean Stanley, 48, has made the international news rounds in the past week after he was allowed entry into the United States.

After registering as a homeless sex offender with the King County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 19 nothing had been heard until Stanley reemerged in West Seattle. According to police, several people called 911 shortly before 6 a.m. on Oct. 22 to report a man was yelling in an alleyway near the 2400 block of 44th Ave. S.W. (behind the Admiral Theater).

One witness told police he asked the screaming man to quiet down and Stanley allegedly threatened to assault him. Police say Stanley was combative with officers when they arrived and claimed to be armed with a knife. During his arrest a small knife was recovered and officers noted he “appeared intoxicated.”

POEM: By-By, Bye and Bye

By Carole Smith

When summer came and we were done
With text books, shoes and math called “fun”
Our little pencil-weary hands
Just ached to touch its soothing sands

Or stare into its tidal pools
And wait for all those slithering schools
Of slippery fins and bulging eyes
So we could shriek, in feigned surprise

We might dam up the mountain stream
That spread its waters fresh and clean
Across the delta, till its cup
Had by the tide been filled back up

It was our most adored retreat
Where at its stoves with friends we’d meet
Watch Easter’s sky to morning turn
And even trees from Christmas burn

No single place gave me more strength
Or taught me balance to the length
As did the lessons life would teach
Upon the logs of Alki Beach!

Wired

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

It is called modern technology but if you came into my office you would view a jumble of wires of all sizes and colors. Several blinking lights can be observed and if they are all lit then I know everything is working. And my techie daughter set me up with a laptop so I could move it to the kitchen when I was cooking. Yes, I would rather write than cook so my several trips to my office during a cooking episode often resulted in many a burned cooking pot.

Several years ago my husband and I marketed a special brand of cookware. You know the system. You buy a set and then you get a special rate if you sell this cookware to all your friends and relatives. Now you and all your friends have a set of four pots, two frying pans, a double boiler and a strainer, —all of wonderful stainless steel. And I must say that the ware would have held up without having been burned black so many times if I had been a reliable cook, tending to the meal rather than escaping into my office before the meal had been removed from the stove.
