Ballard District Council: Metro cuts, microhousing and North Precinct SPD update

The Ballard District Council on Wednesday, Nov. 13 will be a little bittersweet for us here at the BNT. Bitter, because it'll be my last district council meeting (I'm moving up to Alaska! More on that later). Sweet, because we'll be officially introducing our new lead reporter and web editor: Shane Harms.

In other news, we'll have plenty of other hot topics to discuss: Possible Metro Transit cuts, public safety and microhousing.

As usual, it'll be at the Ballard Branch Library at 7 p.m.

Agenda

7:00 Introductions & Short Announcements - please hold announcements to not more than one min.

7:20 King County Metro Transit

7:40 Seattle Police Department – Community Police Team Officer Tim Wear

Thank you and farewell from Ty

Dear West Seattle and White Center communities,

These are my final days as a reporter for the West Seattle Herald and White Center News and I just want to take a moment to thank you, our readers, for letting me write about your world.

My three years here were an honor. I was given the opportunity to interview and write about some of our most colorful and historically significant residents and events, to do my best in keeping you informed on day-to-day happenings, and to learn more about my community than I ever could have with any other job.

Moving to West Seattle in August of 2010, I was shocked to realize how passionate and active a community can be. From banding together as block watches and giving property criminals their comeuppance to collective fronts encouraging smart development and transportation choices to gathering en masse for fun events like West Seattle Summer Fest, this is one great neighborhood.

City council’s reasoning behind no-parking projects explained

There has been much discussion of housing projects without any parking spots either being built or in the process of being built throughout West Seattle.

One project in the spotlight of late, and representative of others around the peninsula, is a 30-residential unit structure planned at 6917 California Ave. S.W., where neighbors are up in arms about the added parking pressure when it’s already tough to find a spot. The developer, Blueprint, has said he is simply following the rules established by Seattle’s City Council.

After the Herald wrote about some of these projects (that story is found here), West Seattle resident Jamie Gardner (who lives near the one mentioned above) read about it in the Westside Weekly print edition and decided to reach out to Seattle City Councilmember Tim Burgess for more details on why parking isn't required for certain buildings. Gardner sent her conversation along to us and we are sharing it here.

UPDATE: Eastridge Church will give away 1500 FREE turkeys and groceries Nov. 23

The program is for families in need and people lined up starting at 4 am

UPDATE 10 am
People began lining up early, as early as 4 am in the shivering cold, for the Eastridge Church turkey and grocery giveaway Nov. 23. Volunteers arrived at 5:30 to prepare for the annual event. They split the total number of turkeys between two locations, Issaquah and West Seattle, but at 1500 birds, that means lot of people will have a genuinely thankful turkey day.

Original Post Nov. 11
As they've done for several years now Eastridge Church will provide 1,500 free Thanksgiving turkeys and bags of groceries to families in need on Saturday, November 23, beginning at 9 a.m. (while supplies last) at their two locations: Issaquah and West Seattle. The church will also be giving free haircuts from licensed stylists (Issaquah only), coats and gloves for children and adults, and Bibles.

Jerry's View: Saving my skin; I'd rather be lucky than good

One afternoon, a few weeks after I took over the paper in 1952, I got a call at the office. "Good morning, White Center News," I proudly answered. The man on the line said " This is Dick Scrawge and I want to place an ad in your paper," he said.

"Okay Mr. Scrawge, I'd be delighted to help you," I replied. He proceeded to explain that it would be better if I came over to his place to discuss. I said I would be happy to come over and where exactly would that be was my next question. "What do you mean, we're where we've always been, you idiot!, right here next to Harney's store!"

"Oh, I said, I am quite sorry, I thought you said your name was Scrawge!, but you meant you are calling from Dick's Garage," I answered.
He wondered how the Kent News-Journal had let me go!

By Gerardo Bolong

ORTING - Two second half goals propelled the Seattle Christian girls soccer team to a 2-0 winner fifth-to-state and loser out win against Nisqually League foe Cedar Park Christian (Bothell) in a Nov. 7th match of the 1A Tri-District 1/2/3 tournament held at the Orting Middle School field.

In their third win in as many tries against Cedar Park Christian, the Warriors exercised steadily stronger pressure as the the game took its course.
