More than clay: Ballard’s resident potter, Regnor Reinholdtsen

He’s been named the “the embodiment of the renaissance in Seattle” and “a wizard from Valhalla,” but many know Regnor Reinholdtsen as a humble potter and teacher.

Beyond pottery, Reinholdtsen is a complex man with many hobbies including fishing and sailing. He owns two wooden boats, one a 36-foot teak sloop called Hintha.

“I’m a jack-of-all trades really. My Achilles heal would be electricity,” Reinholdtsen said in a documentary friends made about him.

Reinholdtsen explained that when he was young he did not have electricity but later when he moved to Ballard from Norway they did and he shocked himself with a fork accidentally and was blown through
an end table.

Reinholdtsen has been a Ballard fixture in the arts for his entire life. Born in Norway, Reinholdtsen moved to Seattle in 1947 when he was just 4 years old. His father worked as a commercial fisherman living largely away from home.

"I did not get to see my father much at all. We had to live with a different family while he was away,” said Reinholdtsen.

Rain City on Market Street to close

by Christy Wolyniak

After serving the movie buffs of the Ballard community for 25 years, Rain City Video is sad to say goodbye to their location on Market Street. However, in spite of the loss of having a handpicked movie collection in its backyard, Sunset Hill’s Rain City is revving up its store with artistic flair.

For most neighborhoods, renting a movie equates to a large red box with a limited selection of hot picks thanks to the internet chasing nearly every video store out of town. However, Rain City Video Owner, Mark Vrieling, is not afraid of the online movie giants because for him film is an artistic presence, it’s personal, and he hopes to continue supplying authentic films with his knowledgeable staff for years to come.

At Large in Ballard: The art of browsing

By Peggy Sturdivant

There is a “book row” taking shape (triangular) in Ballard between the historic Murphy Building and the finally reopened retail corner of 20th NW. The most visible businesses are All the Best Pet Care and Bauhaus Coffee on Market. But look south on 20th NW, and be prepared to relearn the meaning of browsing.

Before browser referred to a program used to navigate the Internet by connecting with a Web system, but after it first described an animal that feeds on the leaves and shoots of trees, it was almost always associated with someone looking at books. As a verb, browsing is usually associated with perusing merchandise. The clerk asks, “Can I help you?” Potential customer answers, “Just browsing.”

Purveyors of used and rare books encourage browsing because it’s likely that their in-house customer isn’t looking for a specific volume, but as a book lover may discover something they didn’t even know existed. And now there’s a whole Ballard commercial area for those who prefer grazing used books to nibbling tree shoots, with its nexus at the Murphy Building.
