Supporters walk for safety after a local man is killed

By Ken Robinson

A community was devastated by a horrific collision on Monday, December 30, as James St. Clair crossed at the intersection of SW Graham Street and 35th Avenue Southwest. Mr. St. Clair, 69 years old, had lived at High Point less than one month. His was the second fatality at this intersection. Susanne Scaringi, 27 years old, died on her bicycle here in September 2006.
On Saturday, January 18 at 1 p.m. in front of the High Point Branch Library, 3411 SW
Raymond Street, supporters walked one block south to the crash site to pay their respects to the family and friends of James St. Clair, and then walked another two blocks to Neighborhood House at 6400 Sylvan Way SW for juice and snacks and a brief discussion with City of Seattle officials about the tragedy and how to make safer streets for everyone in the High Point area.
Since 2006, there have been five fatalities as well as numerous serious injuries and near misses as children, adults and the elderly cross fast-moving 35th Avenue SW near High Point.

For sale. Cat carrier. No longer needed.

By Ken Robinson

For a few years, it was just the two of us in that house on the river. Once in a while, a deer walked through the yard. And sometimes an eagle perched nearby. We weren't pet lovers. Friends had dogs. A Neighbor had a big burly cat named Orangie. But neither of us had 'owned' a pet for years.

It was somewhere between a scream and a yell. "Don't feed him!" the Redhead said when he came to the door and stared at us. He turned this way and that so we could get a good look at the tuxedo he wore. He arched his back and gave us the once-over.

When that cat in the tux came to the door, I decided the polite thing to do was feed him. I gave him a taste of tuna on a plate on the deck .

We watched him through the glass door that first afternoon. With a full belly, he curled up on the deck and napped. In the morning, he was still there.

The Redhead said "I told you not to feed him."

We went outside and watched him lick the last of the tuna juices off the place. We gave him water in a bowl. That ritual was to be repeated many thousands of times over the next twenty-plus years.

Ever try Lexington style BBQ Chicken? Bourbon and Bones opens in Fre-lard

Walking into Bourbon and Bones at Leary Way and Bright Street is like reemerging in a carnivore’s salivating dream scape. The space is bright, rustic and stinks of the sultry sins of smoked swine and a mad bovine brisket lust – all drenched in barrels of bourbon and tangy barbecue sauce. Good things happen here.

Michael Law is the chef and co-owner with Michael McConnell (Via Tribunali, Caffe Vita) of Bourbon and Bones. He has been cooking around the world for most of his life, but with this new roadhouse-feeling restaurant, Law is keeping to his roots.

Over a glass of Seapine Pale Ale, Law took an hour away from perfecting preparations and ordering rare bottles of bourbon to speak with the Ballard News Tribune about the opening.

“I noticed there is nothing here that stands up to barbecue in North Carolina or the south, and I’m hoping to bring that here and make it in a very rustic way,” said Law.

A native of North Carolina, Law has honed his craft of Lexington style barbecue and synthesized it with flavors and techniques he’s picked up along the way traveling throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s.
