SLIDESHOW: Richland bombs Mount Rainier

By Gerardo Bolong

KENT - No. 4 state ranked 4A Richland located its sites early and regularly to bomb away Mount Rainier of Des Moines 95-62 in a boys basketball match up on Mon., Jan. 20, at the 2014 King Showcase presented by Ram Restaurant & Brewery and held at the ShoWare Center.

First quarter action was a clear and present warning of things to come with the Bomber defense exploiting the Ram ball handlers while also running rampant on offense en route to a 23-8 lead after one quarter.

This pattern repeated itself many times as Richland (15 - 0) overwhelmed its undermanned opponent to build a 37 point lead at one point before closing the curtain on the one-sided presentation that included 12-of-27 shooting from beyond the 3-point.

Jamil Wilson-Jones was a solid soldier for the 1-14 Rams, scoring a game-high 30 points along with a dozen rebounds. Andrew Lenaburg contributed 19 Mount Rainier points.

SLIDESHOW: Cleveland Eagles declaw West Seattle Wildcats

By Paul Marston

Cleveland High pulled away early and cruised to a 65-49 win over West Seattle High. Cleveland was led by 5’9 senior guard Kai Green’s 22 points and 6’4 junior guard Jewels Sanders 16 points. 6’2 senior guard Rus Burduzha led West Seattle with 16 points.

With the game tied 15-15 midway through the 2nd quarter, Cleveland closed the first half on a 14-6 run and then opened the second half with a 20-3 run to lead 49-24 with less than 3 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter. West Seattle only scored two baskets in the 3rd quarter, the second with about a minute remaining in the quarter. West Seattle never seriously challenged Cleveland for the remainder of the game.

Cleveland’s superior height gave West Seattle fits throughout the game. They capitalized on second chance points and had a decided edge on the boards. West Seattle struggled to score in the paint all night as Cleveland forced the Wildcats into awkward interior shots or long range jumpers that consistently missed the mark.

Delridge Neighbhorhood Greenway is open; Better alternative for bicyclists and pedestrians

The Delridge Neighborhood Greenway has opened, meaning bicyclists and pedestrians now have a safer alternative route through the area than just following and crossing arterials. The Greenway makes up about 1.5 miles of the nearly ten miles of Greenways established thus far in Seattle and finishing touches were recently completed.

It follows 26th Avenue SW for the majority of the route, starting at SW Andover Street and ending at Delridge Way SW. Funded by Bridging the Gap, the neighborhood greenway helps people cross busy streets, discourages cut-thru traffic, helps keep speeds low and protects the residential character of the neighborhood.

It includes basic greenway elements like a 20 mph speed limit, stop signs on streets crossing the greenway, speed humps and signs to help people get to where they want to go. It also adds some great features like a raised crosswalk at SW Andover Street. Enhancements on SW Genesee near the Delridge playfields include two radar speed feedback signs. The sign helps calm traffic in an area where lots of kids travel by foot or bike.

information from King County
King County will host two public meetings for people seeking information about upcoming construction on a green stormwater infrastructure project in West Seattle’s Westwood and Sunrise Heights neighborhoods.

The first meeting is set for Thursday, Jan. 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Westside School, 7740 34th Ave. S.W., Seattle.

The second meeting takes place on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at High Point Neighborhood House, 6400 Sylvan Way S.W., Seattle.

King County is carrying out the project to control overflows of stormwater mixed with small amounts of sewage at the Barton Pump Station, which is located next to the Fauntleroy Ferry Dock. UPDATE: West Seattle Veteran Center Gala rescheduled for the end of May

Benefit event will help complete the center that aids veterans

UPDATE Feb. 11
Plans for a benefit gala to help pay for the finishing touches on the West Seattle Veterans Center (the former American Legion Hall on Alaska Street) have hit a snag due to low ticket sales. Originally scheduled for Feb. 22, the event will now be re-set for a date late in May. "Although we have had many businesses and individuals willing to help us, we didn’t quite get the financial support necessary hit our goals. By shifting the date, we feel we can produce an excellent, successful fundraiser for the WSVC," said organizer Savannah Miller-O'Malley.

UPDATE Jan. 29
The Benefit Gala for the newly rechristened West Seattle Veterans Center has made some changes as Feb. 22 date approaches. Now topping the bill will be Henry At War (who recently opened for Wynona Judd on tour). Plus, the organizers have made it more affordable.

Jan. 12, at 2:07 a.m. officers responded to a collision reported at 2853 Northwest Market Street (Taco Time).

Officers arrived on the scene with Seattle Fire Department to find a vehicle lodged in the front end of Taco Time.

The vehicle had gone through a plate glass window and much of a wall. The driver of the vehicle was standing near the car and admitted to officers he had been driving when the accident occurred. There were no passengers, and the man was uninjured.

Officers reported that there were obvious signs the man had been drinking. The suspect refused a sobriety test and medical treatment.

The man was processed for driving under the influence and booked at the North Precinct for DUI and negligent driving.

The Taco Time intersection has shown to be a problematic one.

At the 28th block, Market Street splices, with one route continuing as Market Street westbound, and another route veering southwest, turning into Northwest 54th Street. Taco Time rests at the crux of this intersection.

You Are What You Eat: Winter comfort food

Baked beans and brown bread

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

Winter is a perfect time to enjoy legumes like dried beans and lentils. They are some of nature’s “super foods,” naturally low in sodium and packed with protein, minerals and good fiber that helps lower your cholesterol. Use dried beans in your meals because canned beans and lentils contain a ton of sodium, as much as 900 milligrams per cup. That sodium makes your heart and kidneys work harder than necessary.

Dried beans are often thought of as taking too much time to make, but you can speed up the process by using a slow cooker. Put beans in your slow cooker in the morning before you head off to work and you’ll be greeted with a heavenly smell and fantastic meal when you get home.

Add low-sodium bacon for a nice smoky flavor without too much salt. A loaf of traditional brown bread alongside gives you complementary proteins that will make your meal protein complete.
