Ballard Crime Watch: Thief struck with gun and two men 'dance,' one choked

Burglar hit with gun

April 28 – At the 1500 block of Northwest 100th Street officers responded to a burglary in progress. At the scene they found two men in a fight. Officers reprimanded the two, and witnesses told officers one was attempting to rob the other. The complainant told officers that he heard someone trying to kick his side garage door, and so he armed himself with a handgun and went outside. He told the suspect to get off his property, but the suspect kept kicking at the door. The complainant then pushed the suspect and a fight ensued. In the scuffle the complainant struck the suspect in the face with his gun. The suspect was bleeding from the head but said he did not feel pain. He was treated for his wounds and booked in King County Jail.

Ballard bus lines to change as early as June

Metro proposes list for bus route changes

With the failure of Proposition 1, a measure for a sales tax and car tab increase, King County Metro has come up with a list of bus routes to be cut back or eliminated in order to close the funding gap.

The King County Council will review the list in May, and if they adopted the plan, phased changes will start as early as June.

Services all over the County will be cut back 16 percent, and Metro reported that bus service will drop to levels not seen since 1997. 72 routes will be eliminated and 84 routes will be reduced, which means a loss of 11 million rides, and 550,000 service hours each year.

With a third of bus routes proposed to be cut, Metro aims to increase efficiency by not overlapping routes and snipping the routes or sections of routes that are least used.

In Ballard, bus routes 61, 62, 28 and 48x will be eliminated entirely, and routes D, 28x, 29, and 40 will be reduced or revised.

So why eliminate 28, 48X, 61 and 62?

K9 Frodo Bags the Bad Guys Even After Being Injured

Just after 2 AM Saturday morning, King County Sheriff’s Police Dog Frodo was injured while tracking several armed robbery suspects in the 16500 block of International Boulevard South.

The suspects pulled a gun on the victim, demanded money, and struck him in the head with the pistol. After taking cash, they ran away on foot. When the first deputy arrived on scene she saw the suspects and they ran from her into a nearby fenced area.

K9 Frodo, a two year old German shepherd, was deployed and was immediately on the suspects trail through the fenced area. Unknown to Frodo’s handler, Deputy Roland Gervacio, there was razor wire hidden in vegetation. As Frodo tracked he was cut on his left front leg and nose. In spite of being injured and bleeding from the laceration, Frodo persevered, continuing on the track. In less than 10 minutes he located a male and female suspect hiding in the overgrown lot. Also recovered from beside the two suspects was a handgun.

Fire re-ingites in home that burned last week

A fire, apparently rekindled by remaining embers, in a home that burned in the 10000 block of 39th S.W. in Arbor Heights was put out within ten minutes by Seattle Firefighters early Monday morning May 5. Firefighter and investigators have not able to enter the structure since it is unstable and thus far no cause has been determined for the blaze that did a combined total damage of $450,000.

Sue Stangl of the Seattle Fire Department said a fire watch would be in place to ensure it would not reignite and a determination of when it would end would be made later.

Investigators have not been able to speak to the couple, who suffered smoke inhalation in the fire. Both in their 70's the husband suffered burns as well.
