Police Blotter week of 5-5-2014

By Tim Clifford

Theft of whale watching tickets
At an apartment building on the 6000 block of 35 Ave. S.W. at around 2:20 a.m. in the morning of Apr.27 a man was robbed at gunpoint inside his building. The victim explained to police that he was walking home from a friend’s house early in the morning northbound and noticed the suspect nearing his apartment door walking southbound. Once the victim reached the door the suspect came up very close behind him and intimated that he also lived in the building and was waiting to be let in.

Once both men were in the building the victim noticed that the suspect had followed him from the door and down the hallway toward his apartment. The suspect pulled out a handgun and told the victim to give him everything. A Fossil wallet, the victim’s cell phone, and whale watching tickets that the victim had won from a local radio station were taken by the suspect. Before the suspect left he told the victim that if he called the police he would come back and kill him.

Denny Principal goes Dolphin Blue

This week the students at Denny International Middle School and throughout Seattle's middle schools are going to be taking the Math and Reading portion of the Measurement of Student Performance (MSP) state exam. As a way to show his support and remind his scholars of the immense pride he has in them, Principal Jeff Clark dyed his hair and goatee Dolphin blue for the second year in a row.

This comes on the heels of Denny also learning that it was a recipient of the 2013 Washington Achievement Award with special recognition in Math growth from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

It seems this Dolphin pride will not be washed out anytime soon.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Bee Festival was a honey of a time

By Hannah Danforth

The warm spring rain did not deter an impressive turnout at West Seattle’s Second Annual Bee Festival. The Bee Garden celebrated it’s first anniversary this year with a festive musical parade, lead by West Seattle High School band volunteers and their teacher, Ethan Thomas.

It was an enjoyable spirit lifting display of what it means to be a community. Starting at the West Seattle Elementary School, parade participants dressed as bees, were lead to the West Seattle Bee Garden at Common Park nestled in the High Point Community neighborhood. Booths of children’s activities were filled with kids excited to learn about the importance of bees. A DJ played in the park while attendees picniced and learned about the garden. Several information booths, local independent businesses and nonprofits lined 31st Ave. SW. where West Seattle residents could engage in casual conversation about community resources.

Since it’s construction last May, the West Seattle Bee Garden has been a national leader as an example of a successful urban bee project.

West Seattle Hi-Yu candidates introduced; Float design shown

The candidates for West Seattle Hi-Yu royalty performed at the annual West Seattle Hi-Yu breakfast at the Alki Masonic Hall on May 3. They performed for judges beginning the process of who will be selected to represent Hi-Yu in Seafair and other celebrations throughout the year.

Also shown was the new design for the float for the West Seattle Grand Parade, which this year will feature an Alice in Wonderland theme.

The candidates are Nina Coluccio, sponsored by the West Seattle Rotary Club (who performed an athletic dance as her talent), Lorilei McFadden who sang, and Hang Thao who did a break dance routine.

Denise Davis said depending on the points earned in process, "We will have a queen, a prince and a princess or a King and two princesses." That process involves the talent competition, a written essay and a personal interview. She went on to explain that should Hang win, Seafair rules prevent a male from becoming Seafair queen so the highest point earning girl would go forward.

The winners will be announced at the annual Hi-Yu Tea and auction on May 18 at the Hall at Fauntleroy.

SLIDESHOW: Wenn whiffs 14 as West Seattle wins

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Sophomore Gabby Wenn threw a three-hitter and struck out 14 as West Seattle waltzed to an 8-1 girls fastpitch softball victory over neighborhood rival Chief Sealth.

The Wildcats ran their overall record to 9-5 with the Friday afternoon home win at the Southwest Athletic Complex while knocking the Seahawks to 4-10, but both teams are assured of going to the Metro League tournament in two weeks and the Sea-King District tournament in three.

"That's when it really counts," said Chief Sealth head coach Mike Depew.

Depew was one of many who left impressed with Wenn.

"That's got to be one of the best pitchers in the league," said Depew, whose players talked to each other about hating to go up against Wenn's rise balls. "She throws the ball real well."

"She averages about 15 strikeouts per game," said West Seattle head coach and athletic director Trevor Leopold. "She's definitely the team leader. She's got a great bat, too."

Wenn is a leader among mostly players her own age, as the Wildcats have 10 sophomores to go with four freshmen, two juniors and no seniors.

"They've got a good young team," said Depew.
