Two women rushed to Swedish Hospital after possible hazmat exposure

Over sixteen Seattle Fire Department units have been dispatched to a hazardous material report at Keller Supply and Company at 3209 17th Ave. W. in Interbay.

Two women were exposed to something that caused them to have a rash and one to vomit after fainting.

The women were rushed to Swedish Hospital on Cherry Hill in basic life support condition.

Scott Yurczyk, Battalion Chief with Seattle Fire Department, said that no other people in the building experienced medical effects. Furthermore there was no indication to what caused the reaction because there were no reports of fire or a chemical scent.

There is a chemical business next door and a rail yard behind the business, but Yurczyk reported they have checked those areas with no leads.

SFD said it was unlikely the agent that caused the reaction came from inside the business because there are very few chemical products offered at the plumbing supply store. However, they are still ruling out causes.

Porkchop & Co. brings deli inspired delicacies to Ballard

Porkchop & Co. at 5451 Leary Ave. N.W. is turning heads and enticing appetites with their deli-style approach to locally sourced foods.

The restaurant opened last April relatively under the radar in the space where Belle Clementine used to be. But chef and owner, Paul Osher said that was the plan: open fast and then build up slowly using the best ingredients possible.

Since opening Osher has been slowly adding to the menu and has started offering unique "deli-items" by the half-pint like house-made kimchi, kraut, strawberry jam and pickles. They have also slowly added new entrees like Spaetzle and sides like kale Caesar salad to a decorated menu that offers breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner.

“We are just offering honest and tasty food. It’s honest because there’s nothing made here that comes out of a box, and tasty because we take flavor very seriously. We are really trying to turn out the best product that we can – something that is unusual and flavor-forward and surprising, ” said Osher.

West Seattle man burns down house while killing a spider

By Tim Clifford

The headline says it all. No human can escape the existential condition of making mistakes, but rarely do those mistakes perfectly combine irony and humor as swiftly as one West Seattle man’s efforts to kill a spider lead to his house burning down.

At 8:27 p.m. on Tuesday the Seattle Fire Department responded to a residence that had caught fire on the 10200 block of 34 Ave. S.W. The caller, a man who was renting the house, told authorities that he had been trying to kill a spider using a spray paint can and a lighter. Once the tenant caught the eight-legged creature ablaze it scurried into a hole in the wall that then also caught fire. Within minutes the fire had spread to the attic of the residence.

When fire crews initially arrived on the scene, an unknown bystander informed them that the tenant had been keeping a store of ammunition in the attic. Popping sounds from the attic led the fire crews to approach the fire defensively at first instead of going inside. Once it was confirmed that this was misinformation, the fire department was able to go inside and stopped the fire in about 15 minutes.

Police Looking For Knife-Wielding Carjacker

Written by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee

Do you know where detectives can find Cyrus Davis? Police are searching for Davis after he carjacked a woman at knifepoint in Seattle’s Brighton neighborhood earlier this month and then used the woman’s Toyota as a getaway car when he held up a Des Moines pharmacy.

Davis’s robbery spree began the morning of July 2nd when, just before 7 AM, he walked up to a woman sitting in a car parked in the 7000 block of 45th Ave. S in the Brighton neighborhood.

Davis pulled out a large butcher knife, dragged the woman from her car, threw her to the ground, and then sped away in her gray 2001 Toyota Avalon.

About four hours later, Davis robbed a pharmacy in Des Moines at knife point and fled the scene in the stolen Toyota.

While Davis did not injure anyone in the two robberies, police consider him armed and dangerous. If you spot Davis, avoid contacting him and immediately call 911.

Davis is 29 years old, 6’4, 200 pounds, and has a large tattoo on the left side of his neck. Police believe Davis may still be driving the victim’s Toyota Avalon or possibly a white Chevy pickup truck.

Mistakes costly for WS Majors

By Gerardo Bolong
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Defensive lapses aided their opponents greatly in a West Seattle 8-4 winners bracket loss to District 10 Federal Way National at the 2014 Little League Majors baseball 11-12 ages All-Star 2014 state tournament held at West Seattle Bar-S Fields on Sun., July 13.

The loss sent the Westsiders into the perilous loser-out bracket where they must win out to claim the coveted berth to Western Regional action in San Bernardino, Calif. Next up was a Mon., July 14, game against District 11 Burlington Edison.

"This was a weird thing," said West Seattle manager Jason Woodward. "We played poorly on defense and didn't make the needed plays."

By the time West Seattle batted in the bottom of the second inning, Federal Way had claimed a 3-0 lead on one hit and two errors plus several wild pitches and passed balls.
