Late inning hitting and pitching heroics hoisted District 7 West Seattle to a comeback 5-3 loser-out triumph against District 13 Spokane South on Wed., July 15 at the 2014 Little League Majors ages 11-12 state All-Star baseball tournament hosted by District 7 and held at the Bar-S Playfields near Alki.

The never-quit Westsiders trailed 3-1 after four complete innings before staging their second dramatic comeback in two nights of action.

Igniting the West Seattle charge was Ulee Hammer who walked with one out. Kenji Suzuki and Henry Muench followed with back to back singles to load the bases. One strike out later, Max Debiec singled to right center field to plate two runs. On the outfielder's overthrow to the catcher at home, an alert Muench dashed home to send West Seattle ahead at 4-3.

Diebec walked to send home one more run in the sixth inning.

"It felt good to help the team," he said.

Woodward home run keys West Seattle comeback

Playing through until the end of the game has been the West Seattle theme through district and state tournament play.

With the odds stacked against them, the District 7 champions kept dealing out the cards and came back from two deficits to continue their crusade for the state championship.

Jarek Woodward's 3-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning tied the game at 5-5 before Konrad Gerhardt's ground ball produced the winning run in a 6-5 Westsiders win against District 9 Eastlake at the 2014 Washington State Little League Majors ages 11-12 All-Star baseball tournament hosted by District 7 at the Bar-S Playfields in the 75th year of United States Little League baseball.

Woodward made amends for giving up the go ahead 3-run home run to Eastlake in the top of the frame.

"It hit the end of the bat, so it didn't sound solid, but I knew it was going out," he said. "It was electrical energy. I wanted to make up for giving up the homer."

In Gerhardt's case, he didn't see the conclusion of the play on his ground ball.

Transit Advocates Launch Campaign to Pass Seattle Transit Plan

On the heels of the Seattle City Council’s vote this afternoon to place a Seattle transit measure on the November 4 general election ballot, a coalition of transit supporters announced today that they are launching Yes for Seattle Transit, a campaign to pass the Seattle Transportation Benefit District Proposition 1 plan.

If approved, the Council-approved plan will fund Metro Transit service within Seattle city limits and along key inter-city routes, preventing many of the looming deep service cuts planned within the city due to King County Metro funding shortfalls.

“The people of Seattle understand the importance of transit and have demonstrated their willingness to fund it,” said Rob Johnson, Executive Director of Transportation Choices Coalition and a leader in the coalition. “This measure is dedicated to one thing -- funding transit -- and will ensure we avoid deep bus service cuts in Seattle that will directly impact tens of thousands of Seattle residents, will further congest our roads and harm our ability to get around the city.”

Alki Landing reviewed by design review board: new plans described as "torture"

By Gwen Davis

The Southwest Design Review met for an EDG or Early Design Guidance meeting on July 17 to discuss the proposed building on Alki Ave SW, aka the Alki Landing being developed by Borge Steinsvik.

Here are the takeaways:

1. There are four schemes the design review is considering. The fourth scheme is a single building where the entries are connected. "One of the advantages of the single building as opposed to two separate buildings is to provide a single point of entry, which provides better security," said Neal Thompson, the architect representing the client who produced a roughly 30-minute Powerpoint presentation to the design review board. "It would reduce the cost of the building, reduce energy need and it would provide easier access for the residential units." The board generally agreed that the fourth scheme sounded best.

Hot weather makes people crabby in Des Moines

Slideshow

At Des Moines Marina Thursday, July 17, people took advantage of the tail end of the hot streak to go to the marina dock. Some just went to enjoy the nice weather before it turns to what we normally knows as summer.

Some fished. And some tended crab pots. The Des Moines pier is 670 feet long so there is room for a lot of activity. On Thursday, a harbor seal was busy dining on things which either fell out of some crab nets as their owners tossed them into the bay or found other things to nibble on in the water. For those interested in visiting the pier and fishing or crabbing, be sure to read state regulations about what is allowable to keep.

Types of crab may commonly found in the water there include: Dungeness (the largest of the three) , Red Rock and Box Crab or King Crab. Size matters. So does sex. Make sure you know what is allowed.

The District 7 all-star team under the name of Pac West has continued to plaster its opponents at the state Juniors age 13-14 Little League tournament.

A win there would advance the team into Sunday's 11 a.m. championship action, while a loss would drop it into the loser's bracket final at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Pac West had opened with a 14-7 win over West Plain on Saturday before defeating Salmon Creek by a 13-3 score Sunday.

The tournament is taking place at the Cascade Little League complex in Vancouver.

Normandy Park splashes past Seahurst

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Swimmers ahoy!

Normandy Park Swim Club swimmers flung and flinged themselves into the water and, all-in-all, jumped in following their 399-339 dual meet victory over Gregory Seahurst in Seattle Summer Swim League action at the Normandy Park Pool Tuesday.

And the NPSC coaches?

Well, they went in, too -- but they didn't jump in the water themselves.
"It's a tradition," said Sean Piper, soaking wet, climbing out of the pool in street shorts along with co-coach Brenagh Sanford who, fortunately for her, was wearing a bathing suit at the time the kids forced her in the water.

"We love our kids," said Sanford, grinning, towel-drying the water out of her long hair on the deck.

Gregory Seahurst gave it a good go, too, making this a close meet through the first 24 events, trailing, 116-115, before Normandy Park, slowly and surely, stretched this one out to the final 60-point margin of victory.

"They definitely have improved and came to swim and made it a really fun meet," said Piper, whose NPSC team stands at 4-1 in the SSSL, having only lost to Kent this season.
