UPDATE: Will the Admiral Theater go dark?

The aging building and the end of film might spell the end for the landmark

    UPDATE July 23
According to theater Manager Dinah Brein a meeting is set for mid August with building owner Marc Gartin. Previously Gartin had sent out Request for Proposal letters to current tenant Faraway Entertainment and according to Gartin other possible tenants for the space. Upgrades to the aging building would be expensive for any tenant, but according to Gartin it would likely be less expensive for it to remain a theater, which is also his preference. A decision on Admiral Theater's fate is expected sometime following that meeting next month.

    Original Post July 9
The holes in the carpet, and creaky seats are only the most visible signs that the Admiral Theater, West Seattle’s only movie theater is way past its prime.

But the building which went up in 1942 also has issues with plumbing, wiring, heating and cooling and even security.

UPDATE: Two fires within an hour flare up in Highland Park

Two fires in the Highland Park neighborhood of West Seattle kept firefighters busy on Wednesday. The first which broke own the 7000 block of Highland Park Way S.W. at a sheet metal fabricator called Pionneer Human Services at approximately 11:47 am was limited to a bin of metals and 150 employees were evacuated while the blaze was being dealt with. Seattle Fire brought in mobile ventilation unit to drive the smoke out of the building. The bin contained titanium, aluminum and magnesium and once ignited magnesium burns at around 4000 degrees, making it essentially impossible to put out with water. Dry chemical extinguishers were applied but firefighters had to simply let it burn out.

No one was hurt and no damage estimate or direct cause was offered, as the investigation is underway.

The second fire around 12:15pm did considerably more damage to what SFD PIO Kyle Moore said is a duplex in the 7500 block of 11th Ave. S.W. burning off much of the front of the building in the western unit, considered now a total loss. A hole was cut in the roof to provide ventilation for the smoke and it was put out quickly.

    LETTER: For Liberty!

The time has come for us to celebrate our independence, when we were endowed the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Republican politicians have never squandered the opportunity to make quite clear that they stand firmly for freedom and liberty, especially during election times. These are obviously two separate words yet they must be connected in some way so let me gain some clarity here. Well, I am full of optimism for changes in this country, if the conservatives are supporting liberty. According to the dictionary: LIBERTY ( ‘freedom to choose; freedom from compulsion or constraint’). The phrase ‘at liberty’: permitted to do or say something. It would appear to me (might be a bit slow) that the Republicans are using tremendous effort – and lots of money – to take liberty away from people, not helping them to gain it. Not permitting them to have an abortion, have access to birth control or medical care, to marry the person that they love. There appears to be adequate amounts of compulsion and constraint from the Right yet liberty, by definition, is the freedom from that.

Ballard prepares for its 40th Annual SeafoodFest

    By Christy Wolyniak

A salty, warm breeze rolls off the Puget Sound with that deep, ocean-and-seaweed scent that promises a bounty of fresh seafood for Ballard fishermen and an appreciative community.

Since 1974, the Ballard Chamber of Commerce has hosted Seafoodfest, promising Alaskan salmon barbequed to perfection with a secret recipe. Today the event has evolved into an all-out summer festival of music, arts, and of course, fresh Pacific Northwest seafood, with all funds supporting local Ballard businesses and the community.

The Ballard Chamber of Commerce will prepare mouth-watering salmon dinners smoked on an alder plank served with garlic bread and fresh coleslaw that will have festivalgoers lined up in droves down the street in eager expectation.

Over 100 arts and crafts vendors, including over 30 food vendors will congregate in the heart of Ballard on July 12 to 13, vending fresh halibut fish tacos and oyster sliders from Blue Med, Athena’s gyros, and salmon po’ boys from Skillet Street Food, and much more.
