Metro League schedule released as league play begins Sept. 19

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Who, what, when and where is known for the West Seattle football team's upcoming season opener, but Chief Sealth is still looking for the who.

West Seattle's Wildcats will begin their season at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 against Juneau-Douglas in Alaska.

Chief Sealth's Seahawks, meanwhile, open at home at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 at the Southwest Athletic Complex (SWAC) but the non-league opponent has yet to be announced.

The rest of the season is more straight forward for the two local Metro League foes -- with all of the games in state and most opponents known.

Non-league games for both teams will be played Friday, Sept. 12, with West Seattle hosting Washington at 7 p.m. at the SWAC and Chief Sealth dropping in on Rainier Beach at the same time at the Southeast Athletic Complex.

Both teams plunge into Metro League action Friday, Sept. 19.

Chief Sealth entertains Nathan Hale at 7 p.m. at the SWAC and West Seattle journeys to Memorial Stadium in Seattle to play Garfield at 5 p.m.

The two teams switch sites for Friday, Sept. 26.

Correction: July 24. 1:36 p.m.

The Ballard News-Tribune reported that the incident happened at a bus stop, however, that was determined to be inaccurate thanks to a witness report. The accident did not occur at a bus stop. The closest stop is at least a half a block up the street.

Reuben’s Brews hosts Tottenham Hotspurs and brews special British ale

On July 16 Reuben’s Brews had a Tapping Ceremony in honor of the Tottenham Hotspurs coming to town to play the Sounders on July 19. For the special occasion Adam Robbings, from the U.K. and a self described “Brit,’ made a British Bitter (Pale Ale) called London Calling.

Robbing’s invited Tottenham Hotspurs players and ex-captain, Ledley King, to share a pint or two. Sure enough King and others were there to tap the keg. Robbings said Ledley was a "totally amazing player and a great captain."

Ledley played in professionally in the U.K. from 1998 to 2012.

“Bringing people together for a great cause with beer is brilliant idea, and it’s a pleasure for me to be involved and invited down here to meet friends,” said King.

“I have supported Spurs since I was four, and for the two years before I moved to the U.S. I went to almost every home game. … Given I'm a Brit, I'm obviously a soccer (football!) fan. My dad has supported Tottenham Hotspur for his whole life, and so it was only natural that I followed the family tradition. I went to most of the home

Oil train derails in Interbay, no leaks

Around 2 a.m. this morning a train with 102 cars pulling 100 loads of crude oil derailed under the Magnolia Bridge in southern Interbay.

The train was moving at 5 miles per hour as it pulled out of a BNSF rail yard when the wheels of the second locomotive derailed. The third car, loaded with sand, went off the rails disrupting the next three cars that carried crude.

Because the cars were the new fortified safety models no crude spilled. No one was injured.

Seattle emergency responders and Transportation Security Administration officers arrived shortly after.

The incident caused minor traffic disruption in the line where the derailment happened and no disruption to the rail next to it. BNSF reported that it would take five to eight hours to get the cars back on track.

The 100 cars were loaded with Bakken (North Dakota) crude and were headed to an Anacortes refinery.

Are Burien parks, library truly public if public afraid to use them?

By Eric Mathison

A couple of years back, after-school behavior by some teens in downtown Burien got so bad, some Burien residents said they were afraid to use the Burien Library or visit Town Square Park. Cameras were installed at the library and the situation improved.

On July 21, Burien City Council members discussed another tool to make families feel more comfortable at the library or city parks. City Attorney Craig Knutson introduced a proposed ordinance establishing a process to issue trespass warnings on city and other publicly owned property.

There is already an ordinance allowing business owners to have unruly customers banned from their stores for a certain period of time. The Highline Times Police Blotter often reports on perpetrators “trespassed” from a supermarket or service station.

But Knutson said recent court cases have established an individual’s rights to be on public property. An appeal process is needed for anyone banned from a public place for more than seven days, according to Knutson.

District 7 Juniors win state title

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

VANCOUVER--It took two tries to do it, but the District 7 Junior Little League team under the name of Pac West captured first place in the Washington state all-star baseball age 13-14 tournament Sunday.

After coming in as the undefeated winner's bracket champion with a 6-4 win over West Valley on Friday, the District 7 team was knocked off by Stilly Valley coming out of the loser's bracket by a 9-6 score Sunday morning.

But the squad of area all-stars based in Burien bounced back to beat Stilly Valley, 11-6, in the second game Sunday afternoon to win the state championship and earn a trip to the upcoming Western Regional tournament in Vancouver.

That will be a familiar place for the District 7 team as the state tournament was played at the Cascade Little League complex in Vancouver.
Western Regional action will be played under a round robin format instead of being double-elimination, meaning the times and opponents are set for the first four games.

As the Washington champions, District 7 will open against the Southern California champions at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.
