Voting still open on Water Taxis until Aug. 15; Choose from 11 names

326 possible names were submitted by the public for the new water taxis set to enter service next year for both Vashon Island and West Seattle and the King County Ferry District has narrowed them down to 11. They are hoping to get the public to vote.

The two new vessels are currently being built by All American Marine in Bellingham, WA.

The Vashon options include Sally Fox, Betty MacDonald, Lisabeula, Barbara Durham, and Lucy Gerand.

The KCFD offered these explanations:

Sally Fox fought tirelessly as a passionate advocate for passenger-only ferry service to Vashon. She organized the community and fought at the forefront of the movement to protect and expand this valuable service. Fox passed away in 2007 from esophageal cancer, but her spirit lives on through the results of her activism.

Local actress and photographer recreate iconic photos of famous film stars

Local actress Jessica Martin, and Queen Anne photographer John Ulman, are recreating iconic photos of famous film stars.

“We do our best to get the wardrobe right to the best of our ability. The lighting, the poses, everything,” Martin says. This included renting a boys sized tuxedo to pull off the classic Marlene Deitrich publicity photos for the film Morocco. “I much prefer men’s formal wear to women’s now: It’s so much more comfortable!”

The whole project started several years ago when Martin was between acting jobs. To keep her creative energy flowing, she started the photo series.

“It is hard to stay inspired when you are between jobs and don’t have a lot going on. So I thought, why not go back to the people that inspired me from the beginning? I loved, loved, loved Old Hollywood and classic movies as a kid. It has been a fun challenge to channel these women as an adult. It’s also been an opportunity to educate people on these iconic women and hopefully they will go out and see their films.”

She approached fellow actor and renowned photographer Ulman to see if he would be interested in the project.

Q & A with Capitol Hill Block Party owner, Jason Lajeunesse

The Capitol Hill Block Party is set to kick off today, July 25 at 4 p.m. with the Shy Girls melting faces at the Main Stage.

The much anticipated music festival ends Monday, July 28 at 2 a.m., and some Ballardites plan to see the festival through until the finish.

The Ballard New-Tribune caught up with the Capitol Hill Block Party owner Jason Lajeunesse, and he shed light on the history and future of the party.

What are the origins of the Block Party?

The CHBP started pretty small. In 1993, a Capitol Hill skate shop called Crescent Downworks hosted a small block party with a skateboard street course and carnival games. The first official CHBP came in 1997 and had only one small stage on 10th between Pike and Union. The festival had a handful of DJs and five bands, including Flight to Mars and Mavis Piggott. Thrift store furniture was used to help seat the many attendees. We actually didn’t start doing three-day festivals until 2010, when several participating bands like Queens of the Stone Age and The Dead Weather couldn’t all play on the same day. We expanded to fit their schedules and the rest is history.

Summer camping pics

Show us your favorite summer camping photos

The Ballard News-Tribune staff are avid campers with a voracious appetite for action. They can be found at trailheads across the state at 4:32 a.m., waiting for the sun to rise while reading an Evel Knievel biography, sipping coffee brewed in-car using an oil funnel, a worn out map and an old tin can.

Our advertising representatives are mushroom foragers and were disappointed with the lack of morels this season, but are busy plucking berries with the bears.

The Art Department staff are most comfortable white water rafting, mud-diving and shredding trails -- risking it all for the thrill of kicking-out over fallen trees at break-neck speeds down the throat of mountain.

Jeepers! We sure do have stories to tell at the office.

Washington State is abundant with vibrant space. We can't help but have fun. If you feel like having fun with us, share your favorite photos of you camping, "risking it all" or just enjoying the environment in your own way. We will post them! Send your photos to shaneh@robinsonnews.com.

Swanson's Nursery and other community businesses beautify the Ballard Boys & Girls Club

Visitors of the Ballard Boys & Girls Club will probably notice something extra special thanks to Swanson’s Nursery. A new rain garden, lush with native species and edible plants, has been added in place of a shabby grass rain garden that was in need of some attention. Swanson’s also turned a high-traffic area that once was dead grass into a parklet with a four-sided cedar bench resting on paving stones.

Indigenous flowers, grasses and edible plants were planted and a walkway was constructed, beautifying the site. Different species included Sword Fern, Grandma Grass, Chocolate Cosmos, Echinacea, blueberry and evergreen huckleberry bushes. In addition, the bed also serves as an art walk where club members' art is displayed.

The project was a collaboration between Mike Peacore, Board Member of the Boys & Girls Club and Swanson’s Nursery. Peacore wanted to create a gardening program for the kids and Swanson’s was looking for a community space to beautify as part of their new community gardening campaign called Grow with Us. The campaign was launched in the spring and is a rooted in helping community members get the most out of their garden spaces.
