Berry Juicy News!

By Kathryn Kingen

Juicy, local berries are sensational performers this time of year, putting on quite a colorful show. But what publicity hounds blackberries are! It's not enough that they are the big attention-getters in the season's crumbly cobblers, pies, smoothies and cereal toppers. The latest flash is that they have convinced researchers on another stage that they reign supreme. Blackberries now have stolen honors in a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This research project compared the nutritiously important antioxidant content of foods and nominated these top performers (drumroll please):

"On the basis of typical serving sizes, blackberries, walnuts, strawberries, artichokes, cranberries, brewed coffee, raspberries, pecans, blueberries, ground cloves, grape juice, and unsweetened baking chocolate were at the top of the ranked list."*

The Last Free Thing on This Planet: Wild Berries!!!

By Chef Jeremy McLachlan

You may consider yourself an upstanding citizen, but like the rest of us, I know that you have probably picked blackberries from somebody's else's land! Whether you are walking through your favorite park, jumping into the neighbor's yard or stopping on the side of the road, everyone knows what you have done! Wild blackberries are one of the last free things on this planet (besides air), and no one ever questions what those people on the side of the road are looking for in the bushes this time of year. (It's even more understandable now that blackberries top the list for bioflavonoids in a study that food blogger Kathy Kingen highlights in her Berry Juicy News.)

Taxi industry turns to South Seattle College to get drivers hospitality training

information from South Seattle College

A fleet of hundreds of Yellow Cab drivers in Seattle knew they needed to improve their customer service to compete with an increasingly crowded ride service industry in the Puget Sound. Out of all the training possibilities available in the region, they turned to South Seattle College’s hospitality experts for help.

With smartphone app-based rider services like Uber and Lyft quickly grabbing hold of “you do the driving” market share in Seattle, the Teamsters Local 117 Union – representing thousands of Yellow Cab drivers in our region – contacted South’s Puget Sound Industrial Excellence Center (PSIEC) to build a four-hour training session specifically tailored to the ride service industry.

From there, South’s Hospitality Management instructors Hana K. Gala, Phd. and David Krull, JD, created the program and met with hundreds of cab drivers over the course of two days on July 16 and 17. It was so popular, the Teamsters have already ordered three more training sessions in August so more drivers can take part.
