Sunset Hill Community Association calls to save bus route 61

In response to Metro Bus route 61 set to be cut this fall, the Sunset Hill Community Association (SHCA) wrote Councilmember Larry Phillips and King County Executive Dow Constantine a letter requesting the route cut be reconsidered.

In the letter, SHCA argued that Route 61 is the only off peak transit service for Sunset Hill residents for midday, a.m. peak northbound, p.m. peak southbound, nights and weekends.

If 61 is eliminated the only remaining route to downtown would be the 17 express in the morning and from downtown in the afternoon.

Another issue addressed in the letter was parking and how eliminating a key bus route would exacerbate parking in Ballard.

“As I'm sure you are aware, parking in Ballard is becoming very difficult. Route 61 enables Sunset Hill residents to travel to/from Ballard by transit thus avoiding a car trip, and having to search for a hard-to-find parking space,” wrote Thomas Friedman,
Public Affairs Chair of SHCA.

“Global Flyfishing Specialists” opens shop in West Seattle

If the name Rat-faced McDougal means nothing to you, you may not be a flyfisherman. If it does, you may know it was once ‘fly of the week’ and that it was tied by a Harry and Elsie Darby or Roscoe, N.Y. many years ago. True flyfishers relish this sort of knowledge.

Still no frame of reference? That’s okay. Because you can learn about the Rat-Faced McDougal, Brad’s Brat, the Skykomish Sunrise, the Green Butt Skunk and and even the Egg-Sucking Leech when you visit the new flyfishing adventure shop, Emerald Water Anglers at 42nd and Oregon SW in West Seattle.

Opened just two weeks ago, the shop features high-quality gear for the adventure flyfisher. That is the top dressing of the shop. What lies beneath is an interest in guiding people seeking an flyfishing adventure here, there and everywhere.

The company was started 15 years ago by Dave McCoy, a West Seattleite who had a passion for flyfishing. He began by offering guide services. He gathered other like-minded young men and women and was taking trips with clients to places like Belize, Hawaii, Honduras, the Olympic Peninsula and other exotic locales in pursuit of fishes that bite flies.

Police blotter week of 8-4-14

By Tim Clifford

Ambush by man with shotgun
Just after midnight on July 25 police received multiple calls from the 1000 block of S. Director St. that a man was being held at gunpoint by another man with a shotgun. A later call would update police with the identities of the suspect and victim as well as inform them of a gunshot being heard.

When police arrived at the scene with a S.W.A.T. unit they immediately made contact with the victim. The victim told police that as he was walking to his truck parked on the 1000 block of S. Henderson St. the suspect jumped out of some nearby bushes with a shotgun. Pointing the gun at the victim the suspect took him back to his backyard (the suspect lived only a few hundred feet away). After talking to the victim the suspect released him and fired a “warning shot” into the air.

During the interview process police figured out that the victim was lying about his name. When police finally got the victim’s real name they discovered that there were multiple warrants out for his arrest and he was arrested at the scene.

Matter over Mind: Women can do Pull-ups too

Ladies, tell me if this sounds familiar. You spend hours in the gym a week. You buy the workout tapes. You attend the yoga or Pilates classes and do all the proper stretches. You follow your nutrition plan to the letter…

… And then you go to open a jar only to find some unholy powers have all but super-glued it shut.
Then out of the dark, dank depths of some windowless basement comes a male friend. He might have moved a box or walked up a flight of stairs at some point in the last week. But suddenly, like the mythic sword in the stone, with a quick, effortless twist of his wrist, the jar and lid part magically beneath his hands.

…And you resist the urge to yank the jar back and clock him upside the head with it.

The Last Free Thing on This Planet: Wild Berries!!!

By Chef Jeremy McLachlan

You may consider yourself an upstanding citizen, but like the rest of us, I know that you have probably picked blackberries from somebody's else's land! Whether you are walking through your favorite park, jumping into the neighbor's yard or stopping on the side of the road, everyone knows what you have done! Wild blackberries are one of the last free things on this planet (besides air), and no one ever questions what those people on the side of the road are looking for in the bushes this time of year. (It's even more understandable now that blackberries top the list for bioflavonoids in a study that food blogger Kathy Kingen highlights in her Berry Juicy News.)
