SLIDESHOW: Rams bested by Bethel Braves

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Mount Rainier Rams head football coach Tremain Mack did anything but bury his face in his hands after a close 19-7 loss to the Bethel Braves this past Friday,

"Overall we played a decent game, just not enough to win," said Mack, whose team was knotted with the visitors from Graham, 7-7, at halftime. "We played well. We just didn't take advantage of our opportunites. We had a couple of missed turnovers there."

The Rams even ran out to an early lead in the action at Highline Memorial.

Senior running back Renato Contreras punched the ball in on the left side from the 3-yard line, capping off an 11-play drive that began on the Mount Rainier 34.

Tyler Keene's kick for the extra point then successfully slipped through the uprights to put Mount Rainier on top, 7-0, with 10:20 to play in the second quarter.

The Braves evened the score with 6:51 to go.

Quarterback Bryce Missey struck on a 1-yard keeper and Teddy Tate kicked the extra point.

Bethel then marched 71 yards on the opening drive of the third quarter, with Eli Teuteu scoring on a run from the 5-yard line with 6:33 left.

Final Westlake Protected Bike Lane design to be released in a month; public gets behind project in Cascade video

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is finalizing its design work for the Westlake Protected Bike Lane to be presented at a public open house on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

The Westlake Protected Bike Lane will provide a seamless, comfortable bicycle connection from Fremont to South Lake Union, while adding clarification and predictability for all road users.

Similar to the recently-installed infrastructure on Second Avenue, a protected bike lane uses curbs, planters, posts, etc., to physically separate people riding bikes from motorized traffic.

The alignment of the proposed Westlake protected bike lane will be along the east edge of the Westlake Corridor parking lot, mostly through the existing service lane.

The public is voicing its support for this project in a new video released by Cascade Bicycle Club. In this video, dozens of people of all ages and riding styles are shown expressing their support of the Westlake Protected Bike Lane. Click here to watch the video >>>

At Large in Ballard: Take A Bow

by Peggy Sturdivant

Only before the students arrived did Betsy Alexander sit almost still in a chair, holding her violin. Once the young Suzuki students started arriving on a hot Sunday afternoon for the first fall rehearsal of The Top Star Fiddlers she seemed to have as many tentacles as an octopus.

Betsy, as all her students call her, now teaches Suzuki violin and fiddle in her home at 64th & 30th NW.The music is just part of what she hopes will become a Sunset Hill Arts District. A person of tremendous energy Betsy is ready to turn the yard into a farm, the basement into a pottery studio, the driveway into a home for her kiln and her first floor into a concert and rehearsal venue. Her corner of Ballard is already a constant work in progress.

But for a moment she sat in the dining room ready to tune her students’ violins and start a game that would introduce two new members to the other children. It was a post-summer reunion of sorts, this every other Sunday practice that will prepare the students to play at a Family Dance and Holiday Open House at Phinney Neighborhood Center, and at Folklife next May.

Mars as seen from West Seattle; Our reporter was chosen to report on Mars mission

NASA Social Media Event this Sunday

Follow along as one West Seattle reporter heads to Colorado to cover the MAVEN spacecraft as it enters the atmosphere of Mars

By Tim Clifford

On Sept.21 the Maven (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) space craft will enter the atmosphere of Mars and begin sending data back to Earth about the Martian climate. This data could explain how Mars transformed from a lush warm planet to the red desolate orb we see today.

What does all of this have to do with Seattle?

After a selection process held by NASA for what is coined as a NASA Social event 25 journalists and social media representatives were selected from around the U.S. to report live from the command center in Colorado as the MAVEN spacecraft reaches its orbiting destination. I was lucky enough to have been selected and will be providing coverage of the event all day this Sunday on Sept. 21 from Colorado at the Lockheed Martin Facilities and the University of Colorado.
