An apparent homicide in the White Center area is under investigation by King County Sheriff's detectives. Human remains were reported to have been discovered in the 10700 block of Sixth Avenue South.

While the gender of the victim was not announced, the Sheriff's office had previously reported a woman missing from Burien on Oct. 13.

That investigation led to the site where human remains were found. No identity has been determined.

The medical examiner will make the judgement as to whether the remains belong to that of the missing woman or not.

Folk-blues legend Alice Stuart to perform in West Seattle on Friday

Folk and blues artist Alice Stuart brings her eloquent guitar and tough 'n' tender voice to Fauntleroy Church this Friday night (Oct. 24). The concert--part of the community's Sweet, Sweet Music series--will be held in the church's Fellowship Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults ($8 for seniors).

The Seattle Times has called Stuart a "folk-blues treasure." Her career spans the Berkeley folk scene, the blues revival, and psychedelic rock. A tireless collaborator, Stuart has toured or played with Van Morrison, Joan Baez, Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa, Albert King, Doc Watson, Phi Ochs, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Mississippi John Hurt, and many others. She was briefly a member of Zappa's band, the Mothers of Invention.

Along the way, Stuart has blazed a trail for women in blues and rock 'n' roll.

"There would be no Bonnie Raitt without Alice Stuart," said music historian and blues hall-of-famer Dick Waterman.

Stuart describes her brand of music as "American roots, pure and simple."

"We look forward to a wonderful evening of stories and songs," said Bronwyn Edwards, coordinator of the Sweet, Sweet Music series.

Georgie Bright Kunkel: Try Pleasing Everyone

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

People ask me how I find something to write about for the weekly paper. I reply that every morning I wake up with my mind whirring like an electric mixer. As I often say, “I get no sympathy because I have no life threatening illnesses –not even Alzheimer’s.” So my little aches and pains must go unheralded and un-pampered. Not that some mornings I don’t have the urge to roll over and go back to sleep. Luckily I come from upstate Maine stock with some Missouri stubbornness thrown in. My mother used to get up at first light to have some quiet time before her brood of eight children still living at home bounded downstairs asking, “What’s for breakfast?”

I remember when one time we couldn’t get out the door from the upstairs because an earthquake had knocked the dining room stove over blocking our way. That meant that one of my older brothers had to crawl out the upstairs window and drop from the sloping roof onto the back porch and go in and clear the way. We kids thought it was exciting but my mother was upset even though she never let on that she was.

Seahawks and United Way of King County score a touchdown at Cascade middle school

by Greg McCorkle

Students at Cascade Middle School in Burien were treated with a big surprise yesterday when Seahawk players led by quarterback Russell Wilson and slot receiver Doug Baldwin came to their school for a Home Town Huddle event to inform students about good eating habits and an active healthy lifestyle.
Home Town Huddle, created in 1999 by the NFL and the United Way, is a program that helps franchises volunteer within their local communities. King County United Way and the Seahawks have set the bar in what a franchise community relationship can look like. At this event were representatives of CostCo and the DLR Architects Group of Seattle.
