Orca protection zone is subject of presentation Oct. 30

information from The Whale Trail

The Southern Resident Killer Whales are endangered and seriously declining; their 2014 population of 79 is the lowest since 1985. To aid their recovery, Orca Relief is urging NOAA Fisheries to conduct a public process that will result in a Whale Protection Zone for the SRKWs.

A well designed and enforced WPZ would provide the Southern Resident Orca a safe-haven in the very core of their critical habitat, and a relief from vessel impacts including noise, disturbance and air pollution. Bruce Stedman, Executive Director of Orca Relief will describe the key aspects of how a protected area for the Orca should be developed and how it could help the SRKWs begin to recover.

Join us to hear the latest about the orcas, and updates from Robin Lindsay (Seal Sitters), and Diver Laura James (tox-ick.org). This is the first in a new series of Orca Talks hosted by The Whale Trail in West Seattle.

Buy tickets ahead of time and we'll save you a seat! And hurry - this will likely sell out.

SLIDESHOW: Sealth takes Westside honors beating West Seattle Wildcats in Huling Bowl

by Paul Moseley

The Chief Sealth Seahawks showed took the west side honors tonight as they won the 2014 Huling Bowl in dramatic fashion friday night, beating West Seattle 18-14.

West Seattle came in with intensity - having battled against bigger schools all year in the Metro Sound league - they opened the game on defense by sacking Sealth QB Weston Reed twice in the first series.

On their first possession, the Wildcats exploded off the line and set Fynniecko Glover up for a 15 yard run for the first score, going up 7-0.

In the 2nd quarter, it was the Wildcats again. Quarterback Joey Kane connected on a beautiful 40 yard pass to Carter Mensing. That set Glover up for his 2nd running TD from 5 yards out and it was 14-0 at half-time.

Chief Sealth finally converted in the top of the 4th quarter with a 35 yard run by Daron Camacho, closing the gap to 14-7. Then, at 6:21 in the 4th, Chief Sealth recovered a fumble on the West Seattle 25 yard line. 2 minutes later, Camacho was in the end zone again. A 2 point conversion by Reed put Chief Sealth on top 15-14.

SLIDESHOW: Wildcats sixth at Metro golf tourney

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Golf, West Seattle Wildcats style.

This season the team experienced some good success, with a win for the boys team over league power O'Dea for the first time in at least a few years.

The Wildcats also posted a 7-2 league finish that was the best for some time, too, and, the good times on the fairways, greens, rough, sand bunkers and tees continue for two of its golfers who just qualified past the Metro Golf Tournament at the West Seattle Golf Course to the district tourney happening in Snohomish on Monday.

"Only Kevin Cuddy is a senior, and graduates," said Wildcats' coach, Velko Vitalich. "Everybodyelse comes back."

So the success should continue next season for the Wildcats, with the majority of the team coming back including Jack Page, Alex Nguyen and Tony Flores, who altogether in this Metro tourney helped the sixth place finish happen out of 15 3A Metro schools.

Also returning for the Wildcats, and largely helping the team notch that top six finish are the top two players for them, being Zach Gibson and Bailey Fuentes.

MR pair to district

By Gerardo Bolong

KENT - Kepe Bonner and Tyler Andrews of Mount Rainier earned a West Central/Southwest 4A bi-district boys tennis berth following play that began with South Puget Sound League North Division action on Oct. 9 at Kent Meridian High School.

After surviving the round of 32, the pair moved into the division crossover matches in the round of 16.

Bonner and Andrews began with a tough 6-3, 6-2, win against Sam Morman and Jacob Brown of Puyallup before Cameron Martin and Donavan Gomez of Thomas Jefferson sent the Ram pair into the consolation round, 6-1, 6-2.
Regrouping strongly, Bonner and Andrews were matched against another Puyallup pairing, this time the team of Connor Herriford and Jackson Hope, with a bi-district berth on the line.

This pairing forced the Ram pair into survival of the fittest mode with Bonner and Andrews out stroking the Vikings 6-3 in the first set. On and on the teams squared off in the second set. Using a late service break, the H & H tandem pulled out a 7-5 second set triumph.

Dogs fall to Pirates

By Gerardo Bolong
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

TUKWILA - Domination of the singles matches propelled the Highline High School boys tennis team to a 5-2 Seamount League win against Foster on Thurs., Oct. 16.

The Pirates improved to 5-5 league and 5-6 overall while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-7 league as well as the same overall. The league tournament begins on Oct. 23 after school classes end for the day and will follow the same schedule on Friday at the Valley Ridge Park courts in SeaTac. The tourney will continue on Saturday, if necessary.

"We've got a mixture of senior and freshman, this year," said Bulldog head coach Sopheak Ngeth. "Or No. 1 doubles has seniors who took up tennis at a later age than your typical seniors."

Jason Hewett posted a 6-1, 6-2, No. 2 doubles win against Foster's Dousiltan Nguyen as part of Highline's singles control.

"I tried mainly to hit to his backhand," said Hewett. "I'd like to get to district and even state."

Tyler Terlouw's 6-0, 6-0, defeat of Araic Papryan added to the Pirate bank of singles wins in the No. 3 match up.
