Simushir Under Tow by Barbara Foss

Foss Maritime's ocean-going tug, the Barbara Foss, is towing the Russian cargo vessel, Simushir, which lost power late Thursday night off the west coast of Haida Gwaii.

The Barbara Foss is currently traveling at 5.5 knots and is expected to arrive at the Port of Prince Rupert, BC with the Simushir in tow at approximately 10:00 p.m. Pacific Time tonight, where two assist tugs and a pilot will be on hand to help the ship dock.

"We've been working very closely with the Canadian Coast Guard and the Joint Rescue Coordination Center to successfully manage this situation," said Gary Faber, Senior Vice President of Foss Maritime. "At this point, the ship is riding well behind the tug, and the weather and sea conditions are not posing concerns. We expect a steady and uneventful voyage to Prince Rupert."

Police blotter week of 10-20-14

By Tim Clifford

Assault on Barton Street
On Oct. 13 two police officers on bike patrol were flagged down by a citizen on California Ave. S.W. / S.W. Erskine WY at 3:37 p.m. to report a drunken man who was “acting strange” a couple of blocks over. The officers made their way to the man to investigate what was going on.

The man, a transient, admitted to the officers that he was drunk and that his strange behavior was due to the fact that he hadn’t slept in days due to paranoia. On Oct. 9 while sleeping the man had been brutally assaulted and as a result was too frightened to let his guard down at any time.

The victim explained to the officers that on Oct. 9 at approximately 4:30 p.m. he was sleeping in a makeshift shelter near the Westwood Village shopping center on the 2800 block of S.W. Barton St. when he was awoken by the sounds of two men approaching.

A male driver of second vehicle got out on his own. He was also taken to Harborview for examination.

SLIDESHOW: Fauntleroy Fall Festival was fun, frivolous and definitely festive

The 12th Annual Fauntleroy Fall Festival a free event, went off without a hitch Oct. 19 (unless you count the hitches on the ponies from Dreamland Ponies!). The community event is supported by donations and sponsors including the Fauntleroy Community Association.

It featured live music, pumpkin painting, birdhouse making, a cakewalk (with some extraordinary cakes), a chidren's petting zoo area, and pony rides, supplied this year by Dreamland Ponies who took the place of the previous pony contractor.

The event got sunny skies and warm temperatures which helped the healthy turnout.

SLIDESHOW: Evergreen twins take top two boys spots in Seamount Championship

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Evergreen Wolverines twins Marques and Matthew Chacon received their blue and red first and second place medals to drape around their necks from Ray Prentice's hand, following the Seamount League Championship meet races for girls and boys cross-country teams on Evergreen's 3.2-mile course Saturday.

For girls, the only area top 10 finisher there was Kennedy's Lily Grassley, a freshman, taking fourth, one away from getting a red, white, or blue medal. And Tyee's Hector Dominguez, a senior, finished eighth.

This was not an elimination meet so all the Seamount schools' runners go on from here to the Fort Steilacoom Course for sub-districts this coming Saturday. The top 11 teams and 55 individuals go on to the West Central District meet the following weekend. And then it's on to state after that, in early November, for a select few individuals and teams.

Prentice's name was wanted, for a photo he was in.

ArtsWest: New Artistic Director Mathew Wright on his local debut with 'Dogfight'

by Amanda Knox

Mathew Wright meets me at Arts West Theater in the Alaska Junction, in the small lounge overlooking the stage. It is under construction for the upcoming production, Dogfight, Mathew’s debut as director since earning his position as Artistic Director. Mat appears young and casual, sipping a tall energy drink which no doubt has something to do with his busy hands. He is also focused and purposeful—as soon as he starts talking you can tell he knows what he’s doing. He shared an hour of his time with me to discuss the play’s production.

First of all, how's it going?

It's going well. It's been a crazy couple of months. I'm new here.

Is Dogfight your first production?
