SLIDESHOW: Admiral UCC fundraiser hopes to upgrade historic 1961 church organ

When you think about church organs you might think about the kind that is found in many churches… a small instrument that is used to accompany the choir. But the organ at the Admiral Congregational United Church of Christ is not that. It’s WAY bigger. The Balcom and Vaughn 21 Rank Organ installed in 1961 however, has seen better days. It’s electronics are out of date and must be upgraded. The meaning of "21 rank" is that each tab on the organ has a set of pipes of a particular sound. A really large pipe organ could be 75 ranks.

So the church is holding a fundraiser to raise $20,000 (they’ve already raised $30,000) to bring the organ up to date. Musical Director Keith Terhune has been playing for 55 years, including a stint as music director and band leader for vocal group The Drifters in the 1970's.

On Oct. 25, at 3pm the fundraiser will present a group of distinguished musicians including Terhune the well known Overton Berry, Grace Holden a vocal soloist, Tracy Helming - Violin, Dorothy Shapiro-Viola, Savannah Helming- Cello, Sean Davin-Bass, Kendall Crane-Bass and Todd Crooks-Trombone.

SR 99 through downtown Seattle and SR 520 to close next weekend

information from WSDOT

The Washington State Department of Transportation will take advantage of an on-the-road weekend for Seattle’s sports teams to close two portions of State Route 99 and the SR 520 floating bridge and highway next weekend for important safety and construction work.

Starting Friday night, Oct. 17, WSDOT contractor crews will close a small section of SR 99 just north of the Battery Street Tunnel and SR 520 from Montlake Boulevard to Interstate 405. These closures will give SR 99 tunnel contractor crews the space they need to move underground utility lines, and allow contactors on SR 520 to begin demolition of the never-completed R.H. Thomson Expressway “Ramps to Nowhere.” Also, crews will stripe the roadway on the Eastside.

In addition, the SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct will close during the day on Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19, to allow WSDOT bridge inspection teams to conduct a semiannual inspection of the aging structure.

All lanes of SR 99 and SR 520 will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in time for the morning commute.

Lancers own first

No. 2 state ranked 3A volleyball Kennedy Catholic possessed first place after using tough serving to pass home team Evergreen (White Center) 3-0 in a battle of previously unbeaten Seamount League volleyball teams at the Evergreen gym on Tues., Oct. 7.

The Lancers possessed first place at 7-0 and 7-0 overall while the Wolverines dropped to 6-1 and 6-2 following the encounter of squads whose toughest league match turned out to this match up.

"Our serving was tough and it put us in good position for points," said KC head coach Liz Quitiquit. "Our tough serves kept them off balance. They're the toughest match we've had."

In front of a sizable audience, the home team resembled players with feet embedded in concrete as the showdown appeared to be a huge mismatch in the first set. Kennedy Catholic owned all the connections after overcoming a 6-5 Evergreen lead. Against weak receiving, the Lancers showed superior serving and hitting power to turn their 13-8 margin into a 25-8 set domination.
