Here comes the rain! You can prevent clogged street drains

The fall monsoon will be upon us any day now — and when those first autumn rains hit, some 20,000 miles of drainage pipes and ditches and hundreds of thousands of street drains in King, Snohomish, Kitsap and Pierce counties will be put to the test.

Although public utility crews work hard throughout the year to maintain drainage systems and get them ready for the storm season, a single big fall gale with high winds and driving rain can clog an overwhelming number of street drains with fallen leaves and litter, in a matter of hours.

At such times, utility crews are literally swamped with work as they labor to clear clogged drains that can lead to flooded streets, potential property damage and dangerous driving conditions.(Throughout the four-county area, it is estimated that there are several hundred thousand street drains—just in Seattle, there are nearly 80,000.)

Swedish Receives Consumer Choice Award from National Research Corporation

Swedish announced today it has received the 2014/2015 Consumer Choice Award from National Research Corporation. The annual award recognizes hospitals across the country for the highest quality and best reputation among area consumers.

Winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s Market Insights survey – the largest online consumer health care survey in the United States – surveying more than 290,000 households. Hospitals named by consumers are analyzed and ranked based on Core Based Statistical Areas defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, with winning facilities being ranked the highest.

“It is an honor to be recognized by our patients and the community for the hard work we do every day to improve the health and well-being of each person we serve,” said Anthony Armada, FACHE, chief executive officer of Swedish Health Services.

This is the 19th anniversary of the Consumer Choice Award.

Emerson overpass girder replacement started, 12 week detours planned

On October 10 Seattle Department of Transportation nipped a potential problem in the bud, literally.

Using what SDOT calls a “nipper,” Staton construction crews deconstructed the damaged northern most girder of the West Emerson overpass above 15th Avenue West.

Staton Companies was contracted by SDOT for the demolition.

The overpass was built in 1959 and has provided essential access for residents to Magnolia and freight trucks to the train yard in Interbay and Fishermen’s Terminal.

SDOT speculates that the overpass was damaged last November or before by a large truck bearing a load too high to clear the overpass. SDOT does an inspection of the overpass every two years. The load hit the northern most girder causing a large chunk of concrete to break off. The overpass is supported by a series of girders that stretch 100 feet across its underbelly . The girder struck maintained support for the roadway deck on top and guardrail.

Take Two #143: Fighting against Cynicism

By Kyra-lin Hom

Hello all. I'm writing to you from Seoul, South Korea. Me and mine quite literally just landed after an 11 hour flight and are now taking a seriously pimped out tour bus (the ceiling is quilted leather) to a little area known as Gangnam. You may have heard of it. I'll finally get to see how reality compares to Psy's portrayal in his internationally famous song “Gangnam Style.” I will, however, try to refrain from doing his horse-riding dance down the street. No promises, though.

It's admittedly difficult to concentrate on any topic in particular. I'm quite positive my higher brain functions melted away after in-flight movie number three, but I'll give it a shot. Please forgive any loopy-ness that may sneak its way in (more so than usual, that is).

Being in a completely different, foreign country for the first time is mind-tingling. Glazed over and sleep deprived though I may be, I can still very much feel the otherness in my bones. I know I'm somewhere new and at the cusp of a fresh adventure. I am excited! And not afraid to express it.

Police blotter Week of 10-13-14

By Tim Clifford

Robbed and texted
On Oct. 7 a young man was waiting for a bus on the 2600 block of S.W. Barton St. around 4 p.m. when a group of 4 young Hispanic males came up and began punching him. The victim was caught completely unaware since he was looking down at his phone when the first punch landed above his right eyebrow. The group of suspects all began punching and kicking the victim as he attempted to fight back.
Eventually the fighting ended when a passerby began yelling at the group to stop. The suspects reached down and stole the victim’s black LG phone and yellow and black backpack before running off. The victim walked to a nearby relative’s house to clean up before heading back to his own home and his waiting parents.
When the victim arrived home his mother showed him a text message she had received shortly after the robbery from his phone that read “I’m gay, you know that”, another cruel act by the suspects to this victim. The victim informed police that he had gone to high school for a time with one of the suspects, a 16 year old Hispanic male with a lip ring, but hadn’t seen him in a long time.
