Seattle students being denied enough lunch and recess time in school

Parent observations show school district out of compliance with local and state policies

Students in Seattle Public Schools are coming home hungry and with full lunch boxes each day as a result of new cuts by the district to lunch and recess times, Seattle parents have discovered. Children participating in the Free & Reduced Meal program and children who have disabilities are suffering the most. Parent observations have found that at least 50 schools in Seattle do not provide the 20 minutes of seated lunch time that is recommended by experts and required by district policy. Parents and concerned community members held a rally at the Seattle Public Schools headquarters in SODO on Wednesday afternoon to present their initial findings to the district’s board and demand the district take action to restore appropriate lunch and recess times.

West Seattle High School takes on the formidable duo of Shakespeare and Stoppard, and pulls through

By Amanda Knox

No doubt, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is a challenging play for anyone. Not only is it light on the action and heavy on the dialogue, but that dialogue is either straight out of Shakespeare or Stoppard’s own dense, contemporary British witticism. It’s an absurdist, existentialist comedy—meaning that it hilariously concerns itself with themes of hopelessness and death. Not only that, but going into it, the audience should do their homework and be familiar with Hamlet in order to follow the plot and keep up with many of the jokes. Take the following exchange, in which Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are discussing the brief glimpses they and the audience have of Hamlet’s strange behavior:

G: I think I have it. A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself.
R: Or just as mad.
G: Or just as mad.
R: And he does both.
G: So there you are.
R: Stark raving sane.

Yes, divorce is a traumatic situation

by Georgie Bright Kunkel

In years past those who divorced were not accepted in so-called polite society. I remember when my oldest sister became the first divorced member of our family. Invitations to dinners and parties were not as readily offered to her as they were when she was married. And there was certainly not a divorce ceremony to help the divorced couple face their trauma. Society has created passage ceremonies for weddings and christenings but divorce has remained under the table, so to speak. In the days when the extended family all lived in close proximity there was always some older, more experienced person to turn to for counsel. Now fast forward and you find couples without the counsel they may need. Just talk to any divorced person and you will hear the sad reasons for marriage incapability. Here is what some divorced people say:

*****************
I did not know it was coming. My husband asked for a divorce right out of the blue. I had no clue. I believed that we were doing well. For some reason I did not recognize the signs that my husband was not happy in our marriage.

Area runners race to state

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

That sinking feeling...
Seattle Christian School's girls team sunk into state by the thinnest of margins -- one point -- taking second over Bellevue Christian, 76-77, while the boys team made it a little more easily, finishing second, too, 62-73, over Charles Wright in the Westside Classic Cross-Country Championships 1A district meet Saturday. The action was held on the 3.2 mile course on the American Lake Golf Course south of Tacoma.
Tyee junior Alexis Sata (21:08.06) took 27th in 2A and Kennedy Catholic freshman, Lily Grassley(20:51.79) finished 20th in 3A to qualify individually.
Highline senior Kelvin Herbruger (17:13.45) 29th, goes, too, in 2A, and Tyee senior Hector Dominguez (17:08.57) qualified 27th.
And Mount Rainier's lone runner to state, in 4A, is junior Austin Regier in 23rd.
But the biggest story on this day was the Seattle Christian girls' one-point win, and how it happened was definitely against the odds.

Evergreen twins reach state

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
Sounds like maybe a late night affected Evergreen Wolverines' junior, Marques Chacon, who took first place at the 2A sub-district meet last week but a week later, against the same runners who he beat in sub-districts, Chacon finished third at the Westside Classic Cross-Country Championships district meet at the American Lake Golf Course Saturday.
"I felt really tired," said Chacon. "I was up until 2 a.m."
Doing what? X-Box, video games, fooling around on Youtube or Facebook?
"He was up doing homework," said Ernesto Chacon, 21, his big brother, standing nearby.
"Yeah," said Marques Chacon.
For Marques Chacon, studies are important. Afterall, he is a 4.0 student at Evergreen High School.
But doing homework, on a big race night? Is that logical?
"'Cuz I want to get an 'A,'" said Marques Chacon, whose twin brother, Matthew, finished seventh in 16:25.15 to Marques' 16:11.30 time.

Pirates plundered by Red Raiders

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

One big play turned the tide and another kept it going in that direction as Bellingham beat Highline, 41-14, in non-league football action Friday.
The first came with 5:10 to play in the second quarter of the game played at Highline Memorial.
The Pirates had battled the Red Raiders to a 7-7 tie and were attempting a 27-yard field goal by Jordan Santana to possibly take the lead.
But Bellingham standout running back and defensive back Tanner Aliff jumped forward to block the attempt and teammate Trent Helming picked it up and ran for a 75-yard Bellingham touchdown instead.
Jace King's kick for the extra point was good to suddenly make it 14-7 in favor of the Red Raiders.
A second big turnover sealed the deal with 8:17 to go in the third quarter.
With the Pirates down, 27-7, but driving as far as the Bellingham 47-yard line, the ball was picked off and returned 50 yards for a touchdown.
King's kick then upped the lead to 34-7.
Highline fell to 1-8 overall to go with an 0-6 Seamount League mark, while Bellingham improved to 5-4 on the year.
The Red Raiders are playing an independent schedule with all non-league games.

"I'm emotionally drained," said Veraya, whose team now goes to state at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way Nov. 14-15. "The girls swam their hearts out."
The Rams' divers did well, too, getting second and third places in 1 meter diving at districts. That event took place Thursday, with Hailey Sagmoen getting 324.70 points and Ava Welch 323.30.
Team scores from the meet's completion after three total days of competition, including diving, were Gig Harbor 301, Stadium 291, Puyallup 267, Mount Rainier 212, Tahoma 183, Curtis 177, Olympia 164, Kentlake 158, Kentridge 118, Timberline 111, Decatur 92, Emerald Ridge 73, Federal Way 46, South Kitsap 44, Kentwood 29, Rogers 22 and Kent-Meridian 15.
