SLIDESHOW: Kennedy Catholic girls' soccer stay at state is short

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

BELLEVUE--It wasn't sweet, and it was short.

The young and willing Kennedy Catholic girls soccer team found itself against a ready, experienced, talented, Bellevue squad, as the Lancers' traits failed to quite match the Wolverines'. Consequently their season came to a close in a 3-0 loss in the first round of the WIAA 3A state tournament at Bellevue High School Tuesday.

"They are a very talented team," said Lancers coach, Doug Stamnes. "They've been together for awhile."

Kennedy's season came to a close with an 11-8 mark while the Kingco 3A champion Wolverines, who took third place at state last year and sport a 17-0 record now, move on to a second round quarterfinal Saturday.
The Wolverines carried eight seniors into the game, and it's tough to play against that reality when underclassmen littered the Lancers' roster, with the kicker being that the Wolverines' state experience is huge with their team having made it to the semifinal of the 3A tourney last season.

"We started nine freshmen and a sophomore," said Stamnes.

Feeding the Seahawks

Editors Note: "Burien native who is now the nutritional therapist for the reigning Super Bowl Champions"

By Tim Clifford

According to Michele Clarke-Mason, owner of Meant To Be Foods and the nutritional therapist for the Seahawks, it takes approximately 7,000 calories of food-a-day to feed a single player. The average intake for a mildly active man is estimated at about 2,500 calories a day.

“I had one player who lost 5 pounds in his first week back and we had to figure out a diet plan to keep his weight up” she explains.

Starting her work with the team last year, Michele, a lifelong Burien resident, plays a very active and hands-on role with the ‘Hawks by designing personalized meal plans and assisting in the daily offerings in the training facilities main dining hall.

Located in Renton and situated along Lake Washington the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC) is an impressive cathedral-like facility boasting a cutting edge weight-room, full length indoor football field and a 95 foot tall ceiling. Housed within a massive green hangar the site is also the only training camp in the NFL with a lakefront view.

Car crash in Burien tops police blotter

One dead and one hospitalized in Burien car crash
Burien Police are investigating whether or not alcohol played a role in an accident in Burien Friday evening that left one dead and sent another to the hospital. The accident occurred just after 5 p.m. when a man driving a late model Volkswagen sedan clipped a car and then fled the scene at high speeds heading south on Ambaum Boulevard. A man driving a black Honda Civic attempted to cross Ambaum at S.W. 154th Street and was broadsided by the Volkswagen. The fleeing driver was killed on impact. The driver of the Honda Civic had to be cut out of their seat after suffering major collision damage by the Volkswagen. The driver was then rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition. The two totaled vehicles were moved to the side of Ambaum to allow traffic to flow while police investigated the accident. According to King County Sheriff’s Department PIO, Sergeant D.B. Gates, early investigation points to possible alcohol use by the driver of the Volkswagen. The condition of the Honda driver has yet to be released.

Don’t Call Me I’ll Call You

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

To be special is to be at the right place at the right time. Every famous person had the intelligence and ingenuity to stand out from the crowd in some special way. It was the person who found themselves in the headlines that gained fame and notoriety. In centuries past, it was the warrior in battle who was lauded. Women were rarely thought to be worthy of fame. It was only when a woman was the only heir in a rich family hierarchy that she could attain power. The early kings established heralds who shouted out their glory. Now fast forward to modern times. Those who controlled the printing presses were the ones who decided what was newsworthy. Many women were forced to take pseudonyms in order to get into print. I was entranced by the woman who had to take the male name of George Sand to function in the mainstream of life. She even dressed in traditional male clothing so she could go out in public alone and associate with men who were allowed to meet at the local pub and discuss politics and the like. My own name, Georgie, gave me more status when those who read my name thought it represented a male.

Police blotter week of 11-24-14

By Tim Clifford

Pepper spray carjacking
On Nov. 17 police were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. to the scene of a carjacking that had occurred a couple of hours prior on the 6500 block of Sylvan WY S.W. The victim was waiting for the officers on the sidewalk near the scene of the crime.

The victim, a 29 year old male, explained to the officers that he had met up with a 21-year-old female who he only knows by her street name (that information was redacted in the police report) when she pepper sprayed him in the face. After he was sprayed another suspect, a male that the victim had never met, came on the scene and pulled the victim out of the car and took his keys from him. The victim ran away and returned a short time later to find that the suspects and his car were gone.

The female suspect is described as being a black female with a medium build, standing approximately 5’6 with short hair and a tattoo on the side of her neck. No description for the male suspect was provided. The suspects remain at large.

Take Two #148: How to Value Art

By Kyra-lin Hom

One of the first things you learn as a freelance artist is how many people expect you to work for free. Americans talk a good game when it comes to valuing the arts, but very few people are willing or able to put their money where their mouth is. And sadly, we artists perpetuate that process out of a desperation for exposure. In fact, this concept has become so distorted that those 'patrons' most able to pay often don't, instead assuming association with their name is currency enough.

Take, for example, Oprah's current, highly profitable “The Life you Want” national tour. Talk about ironic, this feel-good, ego-stroking show features speakers worth millions to billions of dollars (the big O.W. herself) and charges up to $1k per ticket. Yet it decided that the best way to live up to its 'live the dream' message was to request struggling, local, professional artists to perform on an outdoor side stage for free.

Pat's View: “Black Friday”

by Pat Cashman

This is supposed to be the busiest shopping day of the year---although not for places that sell suntan lotion and flip-flops. This is Black Friday.

Except for the police. For them, it’s Joe Friday. (Thanks to my neighbor, Margie Walsh, for the preceding rather retro joke.)

Apparently the term ‘Black Friday’ started in Philadelphia some years ago, referring to the lousy and congested traffic that would happen in the “City of Brotherly Love” the day after Thanksgiving. (By that definition, Seattle now pretty much has Black Friday-through-Thursday, 365 days of the year.)
Between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, retail businesses are said to be operating “in the red”---losing money. (This column has been operating in the red for some time.) But on the day after Thanksgiving, stores move into “the black”---when everything from automobiles to underwear sells like gangbusters.
