SLIDESHOW: Lady Warriors rally falls short

BY GERARDO BOLONG
Contributing Writer

It was remarkable rally that nearly reached victory.

Pulling out all stops after trailing by 14 points in the first quarter, the Seattle Christian girls took the lead in a scintillating fourth quarter only to fall, 40-38, against visiting Bellevue Christian in Nisqually 1A girls basketball action on Fri., Jan. 23.

Tied at 38-38, Seattle Christian was whistled for a foul near half court, giving Kathleen Crosby the double bonus free throws that she converted with 1.7 seconds left.

Following a time out, the Warriors inbounded from backcourt and Madelyn Weber could only fling a blind shot.

"I give them credit for working so hard, especially after four concussions (during the season) and finals week. I'm thrilled with effort against a well coached team. We just dug ourselves into a big hole in the first quarter."

Until then, the Warriors had successfully rallied back from an excruciatingly horrendous first quarter.
Bellevue Christian's good shooting, rebounding and ball control was in marked contrast to Seattle Christian's mistake prone execution.

SLIDESHOW: Evergreeen's Thatch scoring burst in fourth quarter busts Foster in b-ball

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Evergreen coach Tony White looked exasperated, arms going every which way, frustration on his face, trying to explain to his senior leader, Joseph Thatch during a timeout early in the fourth quarter that Thatch needed to do things differently as the Wolverines trailed, 38-36, to Foster.
Thatch did, helping the Wolverines break through after that timeout and go on to a 65-56 win over the visiting Bulldogs Friday.

Quickly, the Wolverines (4-6 in the Seamount League) have four games left in their regular season -- at Highline on Wednesday, before coming home for Renton, and then Tyee and Kennedy after that.
"The next three games will determine if we go to the playoffs or not," said White.

Rats, Feces and Mold, oh my!

If the Evergreen High School Campus was a restaurant instead of a school, health inspectors would have shut it down long ago.

However, less stringent health standards seem to apply for school kids.  Rats scurry around nighttime Evergreen halls and classrooms scarfing up crumbs.  Vermin droppings on floors and desks greet students many mornings in a school year.  The same furniture kids sit on, rest their hands on and maybe even support their heads.

The Evergreen Campus was built in 1959 and the Tyee Campus in 1962 during the Highline area’s period of rapid expansion.  Both schools were built with 30-year life spans to accommodate the great influx of students, and then new, more permanent high schools would be built at a later date.  The Highline School District has never wanted to invest major funds into the temporary schools other than to patch the facilities, never really resolving ongoing problems.

West Seattle Block Watch Captains' Network will address uptick in local robberies

The West Seattle Block Watch Captains' Network will hold a discussion of personal safety and recent West Seattle robbery incidents at their meeting Jan. 27.

If you are approached by a person or people demanding your possessions, what should you do? What do experts advise if a child or teenager is faced with that situation? Has that advice changed in light of recent events?

West Seattle has seen several theft/strong arm robberies this month, most targeting younger victims between ages 14 and 18. We will focus this month’s meeting on these incidents and, perhaps more importantly, on personal safety techniques and potential responses.

SW Precinct Commander, Captain Steve Wilske will provide an update on the incidents. Earlier this week, he announced an arrest in two of the incidents. He’ll tell us about progress on the cases, and will be available to answer our questions. We will also have Crime Prevention Coordinator, Mark Solomon, and Community Police Team (CPT) officers, Jon Flores and Erin Nicholson, as our guests.

Canadian man arrested for traveling to Seattle to have sex with 14-year-old

On Jan. 23, around 3:30 p.m. detectives arrested 30-year-old Tyler Beavis, a Canadian citizen, who had flown into SeaTac Airport with the intent of having sex with a 14-year-old girl from Seattle.
In mid-December an employee with the local school district stumbled upon the online exchanges between Beavis and the underage girl. The chats were shown to officers with the King County Sheriff’s Office at which point detectives began monitoring their communications as well as Beavis’s whereabouts with detectives in Canada.
In the online chats the two continued to plan to meet even after the girl had told Beavis her true age, which is where things get truly twisted.
Per their plan Beavis would fly into SeaTac, rendezvous with the girl, and spend the weekend having sex with her in a hotel. In order to explain her disappearance the two agreed that the girl would tell her parents that she had been drugged and kidnapped for the weekend.
Detectives in Canada alerted the KCSO that Beavis had purchased a ticket to Seattle and alerted officers immediately after Beavis boarded the plane. He arrived at SeaTac late Friday morning.

Victims of revenge porn could seek civil liability under Orwall & Padden bills

OLYMPIA—A couple of bills introduced in the Washington State House and Senate could give victims of revenge porn some restitution by making a person civilly liable for distributing intimate images of another intentionally and without consent.

Revenge porn is the online posting of explicit images of people without their permission.

The identical measures were introduced simultaneously earlier today by Rep. Tina Orwall, D-Des Moines, in the House, and by Sen. Mike Padden, R-Spokane Valley, in the Senate.

“Back in the day when intimate images were leaked, they’d appear in a magazine and the attention and audience was limited. That was damaging to the victims, but not nearly as devastating as what they go through now with the internet making images easily published, easily viewed, and permanent in nature,” said Orwall. “We must pass laws that protect the integrity, dignity and privacy of individuals whose personal and professional reputations are impacted, and who are harassed, threatened and bullied because an intimate photo of them was shared without their consent and through no fault of their own.”
