Burien shoplifters arrested after car chase with deputies

By Tim Clifford

On Feb. 11 at 1:30 p.m. shoplifting suspects from the Fred Meyer in Burien were involved in two short vehicle chases with King County Sheriff’s deputies and responding officers from cites nearby. After a successful PIT maneuver was used by officers on Highway 518 four suspects were taken into custody. The incident began earlier in the day when four suspects were spotted by store security shoplifting from the Fred Meyer in Burien at 14300 1 st Ave. S. These same suspects had been spotted at the same location stealing days earlier.

They are all believed to be professional shoplifters who are suspected in crimes in Renton, Burien and SeaTac.

Security guards managed to give officers a clear enough description of the getaway vehicle that deputies were able to spot the vehicle getting onto 518. A short car chase, around 5 to 8 minutes, ensued with the suspects managing to escape after ramming one officer’s vehicle.

Police blotter week of 2-16-15

By Tim Clifford

Machete attack
Just after 3 p.m. on Feb. 6 an attack occurred on the South Seattle College Campus involving a suspect armed with a machete. The victim in this incident narrowly avoided harm by dodging the suspect’s swing.

The victim, with whom a “language barrier” is noted, initially told police that while walking around the campus he had run into the suspect. This suspect is the brother of a girl the victim used to date as well as a student at the college. An argument broke out between the two as soon as they bumped into each other.
During the argument the suspect reached into his backpack and pulled out a full sized machete, estimated to measure over 20 inches long, and took one strong downward swing at the victim. The victim managed to leap away just in time with only his shirt sleeve being touched by the blade. As soon as the swing missed the suspect took off running.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle boys season ends with tourney loss to Eastside Catholic

by Paul Moseley

The 2014-15 season ended for the West Seattle boys basketball team as they fell to Eastside Catholic 79-56 in the first round of the Sea King District 2 tournament. The young, scrappy Wildcats were overmatched from the outset as the larger and seasoned Crusaders used all of their weapons to control the game. The game had it’s share of excitement. West Seattle brought it’s brand of quick, dynamic passing and lane-driving to keep the game interesting and close and times. West Seattle head coach Keffrey Fazio knew coming in that they would have to negotiate the size difference. "We’re a small group. that’s just who we are, and we have to play a certain style.” The West Seattle style prodded Eastside Catholic playing a fast paced game, showcasing senior forward Matisse Thybulle, who ended the game with 32 points.

SLIDESHOW: Highline-Tyee-Evergreen co-op team swims to sixth-place at districts

by Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

The Highline/Tyee/Evergreen co-op swim team brought four swimmers, all from the Pirates, to a big meet, and, they earned some high places and good finishes, not to mention, one big surprises finish that qualified guys on to state, from the 2A West Central District meet at the Hazen Pool on Saturday.

Port Angeles won districts with 237 points. Steilacoom, second, 224, Liberty, third, 203.5, Lindbergh, fourth, 139.5, Sammamish, fifth, 133, and, Highline, sixth, 76, beating out Olympic, with 68, and, Kingston, with 61 points. All and all, a great job, as, there were 17 teams total from this district.
"We did awesome," said Megan Reynolds, the team's coach. "Very clean exchanges in two relays. So excited. Going to state in two relays."
Two! Not bad for a team that didn't win any of its dual meets this Seamount League season, and, that sixth place, with only four swimmers, that's a 'wow' factor, too, like, exactly what adjective Reynolds said, 'awesome.'
