Mayor Ed Murray today signed an Executive Order banning official City of Seattle travel by employees to Indiana in response to passage of SB 101.

“Enough is enough,” Mayor Ed Murray said. “Legalized discrimination should not be tolerated. No one should be denied access to critical services simply because of who they are or who they love. My action today sends a strong signal Seattle does not support Indiana’s discriminatory law, rather we stand with those in Indiana fighting for equality.”

“This is a settled issue. We are long passed the day when it is acceptable to discriminate against someone because of the color of their skin, their gender, or who they love. We cannot allow bills like SB 101 to take us back to the 1950s when businesses could deny services to people because of who they are.”

SB 101 could be used by businesses to deny service to LGBT people and others.

During the week of March 23, Josephine Maiorano of Seattle served as a page in the Washington State Senate. Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, sponsored Maiorano’s weeklong experience in the Legislature.

“It was a pleasure to sponsor Josephine this week,” Kohl-Welles said. “She was a bright and energetic student and helpful to me and my staff.”

During the week pages assist senators and staff, attend lectures with guest speakers and go to page school where they create their own bills in a mock committee setting. Maiorano drafted a bill that would give all citizens of Washington two free years of college at community and state colleges.

“It’s important for everyone to get the education they want without the incredible student loans that weigh them down,” Maiorano said.

Maiorano heard about the page program on a 4th grade field trip to the Capitol.

“When I came again on an eighth grade field trip, our class took a picture with Sen. Kohl-Welles and she posted the picture on her website. I could tell she cared about us,” Maiorano said.

Asian cooking is often considered healthy because it is usually lower in protein and higher in vegetables than standard American fare. But many Asian sauces have too much salt to be healthy. A tablespoon of soy sauce contains more than 1,000 milligrams of sodium, and one entrée in an Asian restaurant has 2,000-3,000 milligrams of sodium. That’s twice what you should eat in a day, and all that salt is hard on your heart and kidneys.

A good goal for everyone is to limit sodium (salt) intake to less than 1,500 milligrams per day. To do this, substitute other flavors. Try sour, hot, savory, sweet, spicy or umami seasonings to add a bright fresh taste.

• Sour: Add this flavor with unseasoned rice vinegar, sherry, mirin or Shaoxing. Don’t buy the cooking varieties because they often have added salt. Check the label to be sure.

• Hot: Use chili flakes, fresh chilies and sweet hot chili sauce for a fiery kick without salt. Try fresh ginger root or galangal for a sweet-hot peppery touch. Wasabi, hot mustard and daikon radish can give your meals a zip.

Populuxe Brewing, located at 826B NW 49th St., celebrated their second anniversary over the weekend.

Taps flowed with new brews in honor of the celebration, and beer-fans showed up in droves to imbibe, eat and congratulate Populuxe Brewing.

Live bands Burnt Oak Rebellion and L'Orchestre D'Incroyable amplified the festivities, and Food truck, No Bones About It and Balleywood Creamery, offered dinner and desert to guests.

Two years ago Ballard residents Pete Charbonnier and Jiri Zatloukal and their wives, Amy Besunder and Judy Scarcia, purchased the building that is now the brewery. It had previously housed both a cabinet shop and Oddvar’s Automotive. The space was vacant, and they adding plumbing and tailored the 850-square-foot space to house a nan-brewery.
Back in 2013 Besunder told the Ballard News-Tribune it meant a lot to her to start the brewery in Ballard.

“This is our community. Pete and I have lived in Ballard for 15 years so we wanted to stay here, and we wanted to stay connected with our neighbors,” said Besunder.
