Rainwise gardens help control runoff and eligible homeowners can get them for free

Protecting Our Waters is King County’s program to prevent pollution caused by excess stormwater in the sewer system on rainy days. As an extension of that program King County offers grants worth up to $4000 for homeowners to have rain gardens or cisterns installed on their property.

The older parts of King County's wastewater system use a single set of pipes to carry both sewage and rain running off streets and buildings. Most of the time, this polluted water goes to a wastewater treatment plant. But in heavy rains, the pipes can overflow into rivers, lakes, or Puget Sound. Overflow points called “combined sewer overflows” or CSOs are built into the system. CSOs prevent sewer backups into homes and streets. In West Seattle two are currently under construction, the Barton Street CSO and the Murray Basin CSO.

Evergreen track athletes perform great, beginning to end, in jamboree

Wolverines' athletes show an ability to 'sweep' up a lot of good endings

Nice start to the track and field season for Evergreen.

No scores kept, since it was a jamboree, but, a lot of nice finishes, including some sweeps, for the Wolverines, in this track and field preseason event, running up against Highline and Mount Rainier and Tyee, in the action of the 2015 Highline Public Schools Jamboree at Highline Memorial, Thursday.

"Looks like you hit your steps that time," said Chuck Cushman, head coach of the Tyee/Evergreen, co-op team.

Cushman was speaking, there, to Wolverines' sprinter, and, jumper, a senior, Danae Austin. He was watching Austin run the runway toward the long jump pit. And, then, Austin continued running, straight past the board marker--not jumping before it, as, is needed for it to be a legal jump. This was practice before the event.

Austin looked at Cushman, talking to her, and, said, "Yeah," acknowledging her coach, as, she walked out from the dirt of the long jump pit. Austin went to go make another practice run, solidifying her steps, even, more, as, Cushman moved to go give pointers/encouragement to someone else on the Wolverines' team, who was preparing for an event.

SLIDESHOW: Maples helps West Seattle to a 12-0 win over Rainier Beach

Control is the key to successful pitching, and Friday’s matchup between West Seattle and Rainier Beach offered dramatic proof of that baseball axiom.

Wildcats hurler pitcher Jamie Maples struck out 11 batters, and West Seattle mercy-ruled the Vikings 12-0 after five innings.

Rainier Beach starter Arius Willis just could not find the plate, walking three and hitting a batter in just the second inning, when the Wildcats sent 11 to up to bat. Willis didn’t have much support from his outfield, either, as pop fly after pop fly dropped in front of left fielder Thertis Wade.

Maples turned in a masterful performance, handcuffing the Vikings with a combination of speed and precision control.

“It was good to see Jamie pitch so well. He was throwing strikes. If you throw strikes against these guys, you can make it an easy day, and that’s what he did,” West Seattle head coach Velko Vitalich said.

Rainier Beach managed to get runners to third in the second and fourth innings, but never could get a complete trip around the diamond on the board.

By Gerardo Bolong
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Defending SPSL 4A North Division girls tennis co-champion Mt. Rainier will depend upon an unusual combination when it competes this season.

"This is a bridge year," said long-time Ram head coach Tim Lee. "We have quite a few freshmen with potential to work with our experienced returning seniors."
Returnees are Anya Bonner (12), Svetlana Avanesyan (12), Alessia Pepe (11) and Ariana York (10). Newcomers are Leila Marie Martinez (12), Lena Lor (12), Ciera Crone (9) and Hayley Camp (9).

Bonner, Avanesyan and York were full-time varsity while Pepe has part-time varsity experience.

"We're already well bonded as a team," said Bonner. "The newcomers are already figuring it out. I'm more aggressive, although I still like to play mainly defensive and win rallies."

Improvements also are part of Avanesyan's make up.

"My serves are more consistent while I'm working on my volleys."

Junior player Pepe evokes team concepts.

"I would like us all to be a team and support each other 120 percent," she said.
