SLIDESHOW: Spirits and Food Fundraiser at the Fremont Foundry

by Greg McCorkle

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Fremont hundreds of people gathered at the Fremont Foundry to celebrate Bacon and Bourbon, showcasing the burgeoning craft distilling movement of the Puget Sound region and the culinary expertise of some of the best restaurants in Seattle.

Pairing smokey malty beverages with bacon infused entrees was the main reason to enjoy this event, but there were underlying themes that permeated the day.

Organized by radio stations 99.9fm KISW and 107.7.fm THE END, the event was to help raise money for Motley Zoo, a non profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to placing pets into homes that shelters could not handle.

Motley Zoo volunteer Christi Dickerhofe explained that shelters have a hard time placing high needs pets in good homes. Some of those reasons include pets that are pregnant or need surgeries. The funds Motley Zoo raises go to financing needed surgeries and taking care of new born pets until they can be adopted. Last year alone Motley Zoo placed 1500+ pets to loving homes since 2009.

SLIDESHOW: Wildcats season ends with one point loss to Arlington

by Paul Moseley

The Wildcat Girls Basketball team ended their season today with a one-point loss to the Arlington Eagles in the consolation round of the Hardwood Classic WIAA State basketball tournament. The game to determine the 5th and 6th place finishes among Washington 3A schools may not have been for a championship, but both teams threw their back into it, trying to finish the season with a win in Tacoma.

In a close game from start to finish, the two teams swapped leads seven times as each side got hot on offense or defense at different points in the contest. West Seattle came out on top in the first half, going into the break up 21-18. The first quarter was punctuated by aggressive offense and accurate shooting, but both the second and third quarters were defensive battles. In the two middle quarters, West Seattle scored 12 to Arlington’s 11 points.

ArtsWest’s Chinglish is funny and refreshing

By Amanda Knox

Annie Lareau was right; David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish is not an easy play to put on.

There’s the fact that the script suggests multiple and various settings that the small, ArtsWest stage must somehow accommodate. Scenic designer Carey Wong accomplishes this with minimalism: the barest necessities as far as furniture, slight variations to the arrangement of bamboo screens, and a small decorative hanging to provide character and reference to familiar locations. The only hitch in this otherwise successful display is the armoire that lies down to become a bed. It might not have been so noticeably heavy and distractingly clunky had the script not necessitated that it be dropped down and picked up again multiple times throughout the show.
