SLIDESHOW: Lakeside beats Chief Sealth after a big seventh inning

Chief Sealth’s luck and its lead ran out Wednesday afternoon as Lakeside batted in five runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Seahawks, 6-3.

Lakeside scored first in the top of the third. But the Seahawks quickly answered with a run of their own to even the score. Then, Bryan Karl drove in a two-run homer to propel the Seahawks to a 3-1 lead, which held until the final inning.

“We pride ourselves on great defense. It’s not like we made any errors in the last inning,” Chief Sealth head coach Ernest Policarpio said.

Lakeside’s bats awoke after a challenged out call at first base cost it a run in the sixth, causing some unrest among the Lions.

Chief Sealth starting pitcher, sophomore Evan Moe, almost sealed the deal for the Seahawks. After dominating for six innings, in the seventh, Moe walked two batters and hit a third, which allowed the Lions to load the bases.

The next batter up drove in three runs to give Lakeside a one run lead.

“It’s still early in the season so that was a lesson learned. Evan’s only a sophomore. I know he’s going to learn from this game and improve his finish,” Policarpio said.

Georgie's View: Dating throughout the ages

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

It would be exciting to obtain a time machine and set it to ages past in order to observe the dating rituals from time immemorial. Then I got to thinking, maybe there was a time when there was no dating. Maybe the Neanderthal male just walked around with his club and when he needed sex he took it without asking. It would be interesting to flash back to the days before the modern world evolved a dating ritual. Women went to dances dressed in their enticing best and waited for a man to choose them. Then after marriage the woman took the man’s last name and women were not important outside the world of their husband’s sphere. Women didn’t even get to vote in this country before all men were allowed that privilege. As I have probably mentioned before, my mother didn’t get to vote until two months before I was born. And since my father had died before I was born I didn’t have the same sheltered upbringing that most young girls had in my day.

This long running Off-Broadway absurdist Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin is a comedy which places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism.

“Very, funny. You get giggles in plenty moments of enlightenment… A master stroke.”
- New York Post

Picasso at the Lapin Agile will be presented at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way SW) April 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 7:30 and April 19 and 26 at 3:00 pm. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.

Alki neighbors fighting to prevent cell tower installation

The question of potential harmful effects on health from cell phones, both handsets and towers remains highly controversial. Now a group of neighbors in the Alki neighborhood are hoping to stop the installation of 12 new towers proposed by Verizon. The towers themselves would be cosmetically hidden, as smoke stacks, and would be situated atop the Beach Landing Apartments at 61st SW and SW Stevens.

The group has taken signatures, and gotten the project stopped temporarily thus far but they say the risk of potential harm is not worth the installation. The towers would be directly across the street from the Log House Museum and 600 feet from Alki Elementary School.

In the area already, within one block are eight visible towers on other apartment buildings but not from Verizon.

Fremont Bridge will be closed to traffic for painting early mornings of Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29

The Seattle Department of Transportation’s painting project on the Fremont Bridge is nearing completion. One of the last areas to be painted requires leaving one of the two spans of the bridge upright to expose surface areas which are otherwise inaccessible. This work will be done on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29, between midnight and 7 a.m. when traffic volumes are light. Pedestrians and bicycles (but not vehicles) will be allowed 5 minute long crossing periods at 1:20 a.m. and 2:20 a.m. – otherwise all traffic must use alternate routes during this early morning closure.

The painting project began in August 2014 and consists of preparing and re-coating the steel parts of the bridge to help keep them from rusting. SDOT paints the bridge every 12 to 15 years to prolong its useful life.

The Fremont Bridge has the lowest clearance for marine traffic of Seattle’s bridges, and is believed to open more frequently than any other bascule bridge in North America.

Mayor, City Light announce “Operation LED” program to distribute up to 370,000 energy efficient light bulbs

Operation LED Distributing Free Bulbs to Seattle City Light Customers

Every residential customer of Seattle City Light can now get a free, energy efficient LED light bulb through the utility’s Operation LED campaign.

Mayor Ed Murray kickstarted the campaign in the Chinatown International District today, handing out bulbs at Uwajimaya and Legacy House.

“Seattle is a leader in conservation, showing the rest of the world how it’s done when it comes to being green and what it means to be an LED city,” Murray said. “These bulbs will help our customers lower their electricity bills and reduce the pressure on City Light to buy additional power on the open market.”

Seattle was one of the first cities in the nation to switch its streetlights to LEDs. Safeco Field is the first Major League Baseball stadium to use LEDs for all its on-field lighting. And numerous other city icons use the energy efficient lights, including The Great Wheel, The Paramount Theatre, Starbucks and the floodlights for the roof arches at Centurylink Field.
